Samuel English

(Abt 1772 - Abt 1832)

Check this out! Jack English writes "I'm in the mountains of North Carolina on the border with Tennessee. My ggg grandfather, Henry English who settled here was born in Cumberland County, Pa. in 1773. He had a brother named Samuel I'm told. He moved on into Tennessee. If Sam and Henry were brothers, their father was Robert English and their mother was Sarah Jane Crooks."

Samuel English b. abt 1780 probably VA d. 1832 married abt 1802 Mary/Polly Mullins b. TN and had the following children: Robert, William, Samuel, Wiley, Charles, Elizabeth, Jane b. 1813 Claiborne Co., TN, Polly, John, Nancy and Roseanna.
Family story says Samuel was the son of Samuel who fought in the 15th VA Regt during Rev. War.

(From Leona (Hopper) Newbill's manuscript -)
Samuel English was probably born about 1780, as he was said to be about 50 years of age at the time of his death in 1832. (According to father (I believe this to be Leona's father), "Samuel English was born in England about 1730 and came over about 1750, and settled in Tennessee. This was probably his father or grandfather). He married Mary/Polly Mullins in Tennessee, where she was born. She was the sister of Nancy Mullins, wife of Jasper Hopper. Her mother is said to have been born in Tennessee.

They lived in a large log cabin in Claiborne Co., Tenn. Grandmother spoke of the beautiful white floors and the beds with lace drapes.

Samuel had gone to Missouri and secured land for a new home, as Polly's sister, Nancy Hopper, was already living in Missouri. Before they could get started, the great cholera epidemic was on and thousands were dying. Samuel and Polly started to flee to their new home, but Samuel and four of the younger children, Polly, John, Nancy and Rosanna were stricken on the way and were buried near where they died. The others rushing on to their destination. Mary/Polly Mullins English died in Buchanan Co., MO. in 1849.

There were eleven children, six boys and five girls:

William, Samuel, Charles, Elizabeth and Jane, all crossed the plains to California in the Gold Rush, or soon after.
