Had An Outing
Mr. W. W. Coke's Sunday school class enjoyed an outing Saturday in the region of Eldred Rock. They hiked, had just the right kind of refreshments and had an altogether joyful afternoon. Those able to go were Imogene Lovejoy, Alice Jane Bellatti, Clara Jean Lovell, Verna McCombs, Vera Bagley and Betty Johnson was a guest.

To Be A Nurse.
Miss Imogene Lovejoy, who has been visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Ells, since Christmas, received her call to the service Thursday morning and left that evening for Fort Lewis to take up training as an Army Nurse. Miss Lovejoy, who was born and raised in Covelo, attended the grade and high schools here and is well known by everyone. After graduating from high school Miss Lovejoy went into Nurses' Training in Children's Hospital, San Francisco, where she graduated September, 1944.

a short honeymoon in the bay district and
at Carmel, the groom will return to his duties in Japan where will join
him as soon as transportation is available.
She is a granddaughter of Mrs. George Ells and a niece of Russell
Ells of Willits.

A wedding of much interest to her friends in Covelo is that of Imogene Lovejoy and Sgt. H. J. Saunders which took place at the First Presbyterian church in Burlingame on December 29. After a short honeymoon in the bay area and at Carmel, Sgt. Saunders will return to his duties in Japan. His wife will join him as soon as she is allowed transportation.
Imogene Lovejoy was born in Covelo, her parents being Robert Lovejoy and the late Inez Ells Lovejoy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Ells. Her mother passed away while she was very young and her grandparents tenderly reared her to womanhood. She trained for nursing during the late war and has followed that profession since.

Imogene passed peacefully on October 14, 2010 at her home in Sacramento, with her husband and daughters by her side. She was born on March 3, 1921 to Robert and Inice Lovejoy in Covelo, Round Valley, Mendocino County. She graduated from Round Valley High School and then attended San Jose State in a two year Pre-Nursing program. Imogene then entered the nursing program at Children's Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, where she graduated with her RN degree with the class of '44. After graduation, Imogene joined the Army Nurse Corp and served two years as a surgical nurse at Fitzsimmon's General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. Imogene separated from the service at Fort Sheradon, Illinois in November, 1946. While returning by train to her home in California, she met Sgt. John Saunders, who was enroute to assignment in Japan. One year later, they were married in San Francisco. She joined her husband in Nagoya, Japan and was employed as an RN at the base hospital. Imogene was a devoted wife to her husband John, and dedicated herself to raising their three daughters. Imogene and her husband enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states and most Canadian provinces. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, and was active with both her children and grandchildren. Imogene is survived by her husband John, of 63 years; their three daughters, Sally Saunders, Susan Hallen (Larry), Linda Clark (Andy); four grandchildren, Brian Hallen, Kevin Hallen, Andrew Clark, and Ann Tompkins (Sean); two great-grandchildren Taylor and Jordyn Tompkins; sister Marjory Ann Prouty (Chuck); cousins Leta Walter, Kathleen Lewis (Warren), Warren Clarke (Jackie), and sister-in-law Christy Lovejoy (Ken).
Vigil will be held at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, October 20th at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 8:30 am on Thursday, October 21st at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 4325 Don Julio Blvd., North Highlands, CA. Interment, with military honors, will be at Calvary Cemetery, 7101 Verner Avenue, Sacramento, CA. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Mercy San Juan Hospice staff. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mercy San Juan Hospice and/or the Alzheimer's Association .
