Amerial O Hawkins

(1816 - 9 Jul 1878)

Notes for AMERIAL O. HAWKINS:

On May 15, 1838, when Amerial Hawkins at the age of twenty two years old, married William
Hiter in Anderson County, Kentucky, and they would have two daughters together. But by 1850,
Amerial Hiter was a widow, and she and her two girls had moved back to Mercer County where
she was once again living on the Hawkins home place in the home of her father, Frank Hawkins.

The 1850 census for District No. 1, Mercer County, Kentucky lists Frank Hawkins, age 65, head
of the household and a farmer, his son, Van Buren, age 19, a son, Benja, age 18, a son, Lewis,
age 15, a daughter, Nancy, age 13, and a son, William, age 10. Also living in the household was
Amilia Hitter, age 34, her daughter, Leona, age 12, and her daughter, Ann, age 9. (Note:
Amerial was misspelled as Amilia, and Leona should have been Leonora. Ann was correct)

In 1852, Amerial married for the second time to John A. Clarke, a farmer and widower from
Shelby County, Kentucky, who had several children of his own. Sometime around 1855/56, the
Clarke family left Kentucky and moved to the state of Texas.

The 1860 census for Beat No. 6, Lynchburg, Harris County, Texas lists Jno A. Clarke, age 46,
head of the household and a farmer, his wife, A. O., age 44, a son, Jno C., age 19, a daughter,
H., age 13, a son, Thomas, age 5, and a son, D., age 3.

(Note: The two oldest children listed here were from John Clarke's first marriage to Julianna
Whitledge, who died in 1847. Amerial also had two children from her first marriage, Leonora
Hiter and Ann Mary Hiter. When the Clarke family decided to relocate to Texas, her youngest
daughter, Ann Mary, went to live with her aunt, Florella (Hawkins) Dawkins, in Jackson County,
Virginia. Leonora, meanwhile, moved to Texas with her mother and step-father, where she met
and married Perry Lanham, a widower with a son from his previous marriage. The Lanham
family is found in the 1860 census for Houston, Harris County, Texas.)

John and Amerial Clarke left the state of Texas and moved to Parke County, Indiana sometime
after the 1860 census and before John's death in 1869. The fact that they decided to settle in
Parke County, Indiana rather than returning to Kentucky must have been due, in part, to family
connections, because several of Amerial's cousins resided in Parke County, having moved there
from Kentucky around 1838. After the death of Abraham Hawkins in 1837, at least three of his
sons, Pleasant Hawkins, Joseph Hawkins and William Hawkins, left Mercer County and
relocated to Florida Township, Parke County, Indiana.

When her second husband died at age 55 in 1869, Amerial Clarke would have been about 53
years old and still had two young boys to raise. The 1870 census for Florida Township, Parke
County, Indiana lists Amerial O. Clark, age 54, keeping house and head of the household, a son, Thomas C., age 14, and a son, David H., age 12.

Amerial Clarke was approximately 62 years old when she died on July 8, 1878 in Parke County,
Indiana. At the time of her death her two sons were ages 24 and 21, and both were still single.
