Elenor Roberson/Robertson?

(Bef 1750 - Abt 1807)

One possible mention of the widow Elenor was found in Duplin County records.   Jacob Hollingsworth wrote his will May 26, 1790.   In it he mentions “a note of 23 pounds due to me from Elin Garrison.”   This is from a published abstract.   A copy of the original needs to be examined in order to verify the name.   There is no other known Garrison in Duplin County at that time with any form of the name Elin.

Salisbury Garrison, father of Eleanor and Mary was from Pendleton District SC and he married Mary Williams. Salisbury died in 1795. His mother Eleanor lived on his property until it was eventually sold. I found her in the 1800 census there. We find a Jones Garrison in Warren Co in the 1815 timeframe signing as a witness for the family.. (Winnie)

Concerning the possible maiden name of Elenor Garrison, in my version of Samuel Garrison's book on the "Garretson to Garrison, 1662-1850" private copy.On pg. 77, mention of the “William Garrison Bible", Sam makes this statement about Elenor, "When I located Miss. Herndon of Camden, Tn, still alive and in her nineties, she recalled she had seen the bible in the home of a Mr. Dillon in Big Sandy, Tn. She had an interest in local history and genealogy so she copied down the information on the flyleaf. Then she submitted the data to Miss. Garrett for the magazine. In September of 1995, Miss. Herndon called this writer to say she had found some "old notebooks". One had her notes from the Dillon home. She added only one new item! In her notes she had written, "There is an entry on the inside margin of the flyleaf". The entry read to me over the phone, stated,” Father William's grandmother was Ellender Roberson Garrison. Died in Georgia""The missing bible entry may be correct, but all we have is his statement that this conversation with Miss. Herndon took place. He also states, "I have not received the requested copy of the page, however, she is elderly and in a hospice". My copy of Sam Garrison's book is an unfinished first rough draft; it is compilation of loosely based facts and assumptions. The book is not indexed and the source citations are incomplete or do not exist at all. Sam Garrison as a gift gave the book to me and while I am grateful to have a copy of his work, I do not except any statement in it as fact. I use it as a guide only and follow through with my own research to prove or disprove any fact stated in Sam's material. To date no proof has been found linking Elenor to a "Roberson/Robertson" family, research to find her maiden name is ongoing .Any and all help with this problem is welcome. Mary Nell Burnett

April 1779
Elenor GARRISON vs. Isaac BRACKIN: General Issue Same Jury Nonsuit.
The importance of this entry in the Court Minutes is that Elinor Garrison was a party in the suit in April 1779. I know of no other Elinor Garrison in that area at that time that was of an age to bring suit on her own behalf. I believe this is Elinor Robinson who married John Garretson/Garrison at Holy Trinity in New Castle DE October 15, 1755. In order for her to have filed suit in her own name, she can also be considered to be without a husband as a suit for a married woman would have been filed by her husband or at least include her husband.
We know that the Brackins were literally next door neighbors of John Garrison's half-siblings on Stony Creek in Orange Co NC. An Isaac Brackin married Rachel Stalcup October 31, 1769 at Holy Trinity Church in New Castle, DE. They moved to Orange Co NC eventually moving on to Sumner Co TN where they died. In the 1790 tax list for Orange Co NC, Isaac Brackin Sr & Jr, James, Thomas, and William Brackin are all just a few names away from the half-brothers of John Garrison, Jacob, Garret & George.
The only other Elenor/Elinor/Eleanor Garrison I have found in Orange County records was the daughter of Garret Garrison and Mary Hall and would not have been old enough to have filed a suit in 1779. That is important because of Elinor's appearance in South Carolina in the 1790 and 1800 census and in Franklin County Georgia for the 1805 and 1807 land lottery.
(Mary Burnett)

Elinor is listed in the 1790 census of Greenville County, South Carolina. In 1800 she is counted in Pendleton County, South Carolina. Greenville and Pendleton were adjoining counties formed out of Indian Lands just prior to 1790.

Eleanor then moved into Franklin County Georgia where members of her family including her son, my direct ancestor, Zebulon Garrison were already established. Only one mention of her is found in Georgia and it is assumed that she died about 1801. The fact that she died in Georgia is confirmed by an entry of the Bible of Zebulon's son William. The same Bible of Zebulon's son William identifies William's grandmother as Ellender Robinson Garrison.)
