Thomas Castillo Barfield

(30 Apr 1805 - 17 Jun 1890)

People by the name of Barfield have all moved or died from the Yazoo County area but their off-spring are still alive in the names of White, Pearce, Johnston and Shurley families.

Thomas Castillo Barfield, b. 3 Apr. 1806, d. June 1890 and his wife Mercia Louisa White, b. 14 Apr. 1819, d. 16 Feb. 1881 came to Yazoo County prior to 1840 and lived in the Pearce Crossroads Community. His father, Lewis Barfield, b. 8 Dec. 1767, d. 6 May 1854, lived with or near him.

Thomas' wife, Mercia Louisa White, was the daughter of Nathan White, b. ca. 1792 d. 1835 and Rebecca Harmon, b. 1790, d. 1857. They owned the Paradise Plantation near Dover.

Thomas and Mercia had at least 10 children, with four dying in early childhood. This included twin girls who died at 12 years of age. Their children were raised in a very religious atmosphere as Thomas was a deacon and one of the founders of Rocky Springs Baptist Church. According to family tradition, he would call family and servants together each night to read the Bible and pray. It is said he banished one of his sons from home for, what Thomas thought, was a defiance of God. He would not bring the wrath of God down on the household for the evil in one.........

From: Telephone conversation with Earl Barfield

Thomas was one of the original 5 members of Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Yazoo County, MS

"Uncle Thomas Barfield lived and reared his family in Yazoo County. He sometimes, with members of his family, would return for visits to this part of the state, but these visits were rare. I saw him only once. One of his daughters, Cousin Rebekah McCormack, was living in Yazoo City when I was in that part of the state in 1911. I spent several days very pleasantly in her home there. Through failure to continue correspondence, I've lost sight of these relatives, too, as well as those who lived in Texas." Betty Hughes
