Edith Loutisha Hughes

(17 Jun 1903 - 2 May 1991)

Edith Lutitia Hughes was born June 19, 1903, to Optimus John and Bell Smith Leeman Hughes, in Jack County, Texas.

One story about Edith (related by her sister Mary Hughes Spann in July 2001,) was when Edith was a young girl. A scissor-tail had build a nest in a tree near the family's house, and some of the other children talked Edith into climbing up the tree. She got nearly up to the nest and the mother scissor-tail started diving at her. "Help me out of here! Help me out of here!" Edith cried. One of the boys hollered up to her, "She'll get you, Edith, she'll get you!"

Another story they told about Edith (related by Mary Hughes Spann in July 2001,) was when she was a young girl, and she was looking for a safety pin to pin up her drawers. She was holding up her drawers with one hand and looking around on the wallpaper with the other hand. (They used to stick the pins in the wallpaper so they could find them later on.) A neighbor, Charlie Langston knocked on the door and Edith went to answer it, holding to her dress waist. Charlie said "Good morning, Edith," and Edith replied, "Oh! Good morning, good morning, good morning!"

One morning when Edith was still at home, there was a cloud coming up from the West, and Pa Hughes and the boys came in from the field and said everyone needed to go to the Cellar. The wind was already fierce. Nell was going down the cellar steps with Edith following, and Edith started blowing away toward the fence. A couple of the boys had to go get Edith and help her get into the Cellar. When the family came out of the Cellar, the kitchen wall had been blown away.

Mary said that Edith would get tickled easy. She was kinda quiet, and it was Nellie who was the disciplinarian of the younger children.

Another funny Story was about Cora Edna (Mike), when she was small and she was playing with the cat. She was chewing gum and she asked the cat if it wanted to chew her gum. She gave the gum to the cat and the cat went "gulp" and the gum was gone. Mike held the cat up with both hands and shook it and said, "Cat, did you swaller that? You did swaller it, and that was Johnnie's wax!"

Edith was one of 11 living children, four children died in infancy. Edith Hughes Married Harvie Alec Cook on December 14, 1922 in Jacksboro, Texas and lived there until the fall of 1923, when they moved to Hastings, Oklahoma. They entered Oklahoma by way of a covered wagon, crossing the old Red River bridge at Byers, Texas.

Edith's greatest joy was her family - brothers and sisters and her four children, nine grand-children, 25 great-grand children and one great-great-grandchild.
Harvie, her husband of 68 years preceded her in death in April of 1984. They had worked side by side through their time together until Edith became ill in 1976 and had seen many changes through this area of Oklahoma. Our Mother's sweet smile will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
