Samuel Benjamin Hughes

(26 Jan 1902 - 26 Nov 1969)

Samuel Benjamin Hughes was born Jan 26, 1902, along with a twin sister Nellie, to O. J. and Belle Leeman Hughes.

Claudie Hughes wrote: "One time Ma Hughes sent Buck and Sam and Nellie and Edith to haul some water from the tank which was nearly a quarter of a mile nearby. The water barrel was mounted on a buggy with a flat bed to hold the water barrel steady, but it was pulled by the boys. This time Sam was going to be boss, so he perched himself on top of the barrel and off down the hill they went. He was going good till a front wheel hit a rock which threw him forward with the water barrel following and crushed him to the ground. Then the buggy ran over him, too. All the others laughed at him, but he got up not letting it show how bad the pain was. After Sam went to bed that night he cried because it hurt him so bad."

Claudie also wrote: "Since there were so many in the family to cook for, a dessert was a scarcity. But when there was cake or cookies, Sam would get down under the table on all fours and bark like a dog, so the others would feed him their part of sweets and he would get more than the rest. The only time Sam saw Ma Hughes show the least bit of temper was while he was doing this, and she swatted his posterior rather painfully."

"While playing one day, Buck decided to use Sam for his horse and took a syrup bucket bail for a bridle and bent the ends to fit around Sam's neck and tied strings to the bail for reigns. They had played horsey for quite a while, then Buck said, "Whoa dere," and pulled the string real hard, and the syrup bucket bail took hide off both sides of Sam's neck."

As a young man, Sam lived at home and farmed with his dad. Around 1932 or 1933, he went with Orville Monroe out to New Mexico where Orville had claimed some land. Sam stayed out there maybe a year (as related by Mary Hughes Spann) In 1935 when Ma and Pa Hughes went out to Allison, Texas, Sam went, too (he was 33 years old.)

About 1941, Ma and Pa Hughes came back to Jack County and lived on the McClelland place, and Sam still lived with them. In about 1943 or 44 ,when Sam was 46 years old, he was drafted into the army. He only stayed for less than a year, then got out on a hardship discharge to take care of his parents.

In December 1946, when they were living on the McClelland place, the house burned and Sam and Ma and Pa Hughes moved into Jacksboro in an apartment house. They were living in the apartment house, when Ma Hughes died in 1949.

Sam worked for Tobe Weaver at the Green Frog Cafe in Jacksboro for a while, and Pa Hughes went to live with Minnie and Dave in 1950.

Sam married Mary Ada Tanner Carver on April 22, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas. He was 50 years old. Sam and Mary had no children together, but Mary had a daughter named Barbara Plaster. Mary was such a jovial and friendly lady and all of Sam's family loved her. She was a large woman, and everyone called her "Big Mary."

Around 1955, Sam and Mary ran a novelty shop east of Weatherford on the old highway 80, at a place called Punkin Center. They ran a novelty shop east of Jacksboro on the Fort Worth Highway from about 1960 to ?.

Sam died November 26, 1969, in a Dallas hospital, and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Jacksboro, Texas. "Big Mary" remarried and continued to run the novelty shop for several years, then turned it over to Barbara's daughter.

Mary died April 30, 1992, after several years in the nursing home in Jacksboro. She is buried at Perrin, Texas.
