Jacob Lovejoy

(31 Oct 1780 - 6 Mar 1871)

Jacob Lovejoy was violinist and dancing master in the Winter and probably farmer and shoemaker in the Summer. He probably was a fifer during the War of 1812, serving Captain William Morrison's Company of Mass. Militia in 1814 from Sept. 14 to 24 and from Sept 25 to Nov 5. Also, according to Canadian Archives at Ottawa, he probably the Jacob Lovejoy who as a private and musician, was taken prisoner from the Mass. forces June 3, 1813 at Lake Champlain, being brought to Quebec June 9. His descriptive record was: "b. Amherst (error ?), age 33, five foot six three-quarter inches, middle, visage oval dark, hair dark, eyes blue, scar on nose." he was discharged Oct 31, at Malabar.
Jacob took his family on an ox cart through the woods to the young settlement of Charleston. One of the stories told of him is that he was in demand at all parties as fiddler and entertainer. A neighbor, planning a party, sent a daughter with invitations to all the houses. When asked what was to be provided for the guests, she replied, "There won't be anything very good or nourishing but Jacob Lovejoy will be there." Evidently, that was sufficient (Lovejoy 121).
