Individual Details
John George Hartman
(14 Jul 1863 - 21 Sep 1927)
An old bible in the possession of a Hartman descendant has the inscription: "Presented to E. W. Hartman by D. Hartman Feb 13, 1890". An inscription in the back of the bible notes the death of a Hartman on December 28, 1895. The name of the person who died is difficult to read, but it looks something like "Ethalirgdar Hartman". James E. Bell's book mentions an Ethlinda Black who married a David H. Hartman. According to this book, they had a son named "John G., born July 14, 1863, in Iowa". I had estimated the dob of our John Hartman at about 1860 (based on his marriage date).
The Reynolds County biological sketches book has a picture (p. 14) with the caption "Teachers meeting in Ellington, J.G. Hartman, county superintendent, sitting." Two Hartman descendants told me that the picture looks like pictures they've seen of John Hartman.
One source listed John's middle initial as C, but the Reynolds Co. marriage records show it to be S. However, a poorly written capital G could look like a C, and a poorly written cursive G could look like an S. The middle name may George.
David was born "January 12, 1841, in Ohio, the son of John Dixon Hartman and Margaret Parker." Ethlinda was "born September 26, 1845, in Arkansas, the daughter of George and Mary Black." The Bell book says that David re-married on "August 25, 1896, in Iron County" to Sarah Goggin, not quite a year after the death mentioned in the old bible.
The E.W. Hartman who owned the bible could also have been Ethlinda, or it could have been her youngest son, Ebenezer (born April 24, 1880), who would have been 15 at the time of his mother's death.
