Ethlinda Black
(26 Sep 1845 - 13 Feb 1890)
An old bible in the possession of a Hartman descendant has the inscription: "Presented to E. W. Hartman by D. Hartman Feb 13, 1890". An inscription in the back of the bible notes the death of a Hartman on December 28, 1895. The name of the person who died is difficult to read, but it looks something like "Ethalirgdar Hartman". James E. Bell's book mentions an Ethlinda Black who married a David H. Hartman. I believe this is the same person whose death is recorded in the old Bible. According to Bell, Ethlinda was "born September 26, 1845, in Arkansas, the daughter of George and Mary Black." The 1850 census shows she was actually born in Missouri.
A family chart by Harry Hartman (published 1935) spells the name Ethalinda. I have figured out from the chart that the E.W. Hartman that owned the Bible must have been David and Ethlinda's son, Ebenezar, who would have been 15 when she died.
In my transcribed copy of the 1870 Federal Census for Reynolds County, Missouri, David Hartman's family shows up in household 70. Ethlinda's name shows up as "Elizabeth". I don't know if that's an interpretation on the part of the transcriber or if that's what the census taker actually wrote. George and Mary Black are next door in household number 71 with 4 children and one female adult Elizabeth Thorp, age 30, born in Illinois), relationship unknown. George and Catherine Black lives in household 72 with no children (possibly a brother of Ethlinda). Samuel and Mary Black live in household 69 with two children (Samuel, who is 27, was born in Missouri whereas (according to Bell) Ethlinda was born in Arkansas, but I later found from the 1850 census has Ethlinda born in Missouri and Samuel born in Arkansas, so it seems the 1870 got the two reversed. Wash (short for Washington?) Hartman is shown living with Samuel Black. Wash is 39 and born in Ohio, so he very well could be an older brother of David.
It seems that Marian was born in Illinois and so were the first several of their kids. Then within the space of 5 years they moved to Arkansas and later to Missouri.
I wonder if Elizabeth Thorp is a daughter of Mary by a previous marriage or possibly a younter sister (which would mean Mary's maiden name was Thorp). On the other hand, she could have been adopted.
