Individual Details
Donald Cowan Bonney
(25 Oct 1839 - 4 Nov 1924)
The minister from Prentice's first marriage was Thomas Donnell, and the second was John F. Cowan, both of the Presbyterian Church of Washington County, Missouri. I suspect that Donel Cowan was named after these two gentlemen.
The 1880 Montgomery, Kansas census listed a Cohen Bonnie, which I am assuming is Cowan, because it says he's from Missouri and his wife is named Bettie (which matches with other information I have). Date of birth shown on 1900 census.
I got the 1880 Montgomery, Kansas census information from somebody I contacted through the internet that looked it up in a book for me. For some reason, when the LDS put the 1880 census on their web site, there were differences. The information I had previously shows Annie Goodin, Cohen Bonnie, and Zarariah Bonney. The LDS shows Annie Goodwill, C. Bonnie, and Zachariah Bonney. Unfortunately, I don't know which is more accurate.
It was said that they had no children, but it does appear that they adopted (while in Kansas). It was said that Cowan was "...never strong after his army service..." but he made it to at least the age of 60.
It seems that at some point later in life he changed the spelling of his name from Donel to Donald, or maybe that was always the correct spelling, because that's how his grave stone reads.
