Henry Clay Bonney Sr.

(17 Sep 1841 - 31 Jul 1917)

Buried Lesterville Memorial Cemetery. I've included some interesting historical information relating to Henry's Civil War regiment in the actual text part of the sources. According to the 1890 Special Census of Civil War Vets and Widows, he incurred disability for "chronic diarrhea" and was "1/2 disabled from manual labor". A search of the Civil War Muster Rolls on Ancestry.com shows his rank at time of induction as "Wagoner" (which sounds more like a description of his duties than an actual rank). On the Missouri State Archives web site, I found his rank to be Private.

According to Pauline Bonney, Henry was "...at the side of Centerville, out on that ridge where the C.C. Road goes through. He was bringing in a load of ammunition... and he was suppose to take this into Pilot Knob... And if the battle [at Fort Davidson] went the wrong way, he was suppose to turn his mules loose and blow up his load of stuff. And he stood there and watched that battle. There's a place out there that you can see. Oh, he couldn't see the battle, but he could see the smoke and all."

The 1880 Reynolds County, Missouri census has H.C. Bonny and family living in household 59 of Lesterville Township. He is a farmer. The only person in the household that can read and write is Frank (Prentiss Franklin), and none of the children have attended school in the past year. H.C. was born in Missouri and his parents are both shown to be born in Virginia (other census years disagree on this point - for more details see the notes for Henry's father). Jane was born in Wisconsin and her parents were born in England. All of the children except Richard and the two who died in infancy were born in Missouri.

There seems to have been some confusion as to whether Henry's parents were Prentiss Franklin Bonney and Emily Hayden or Peter Clay Bonney and Lizzie Holden. See my notes for Prentiss F. Bonney for more details.

I recently found an entry in the FamilySearch IGI (v4.02) that shows "Henery Clay Bonney" born 17 Sep 1841 in Washington, Missouri to Prentiss Franklin Bonney and Emily Hayden. Unfortunately, no source information is shown for the entry.

Also, although I originally had his birth date as 11 Sep 1841, his death certificate says he was born September 17, 1841.
