Ann Axton

(Abt Jun 1666 - )

Notes imported from GEDCOM:

Ann's link to her father is well established genealogically (see notesfor John Axton and Mealy Whitecotton), but the identity of her mother isstill in dispute. Many researchers have named Ann's mother as MaryMansell, daughter of Capt. David Mansell (or Mansfield). Of late, research has come to light indicating this is not the case. Central tothis new proof is that John Axton purchased 600 acres of land from HenryBlagrave and his wife Mary, dau. of Capt. David Mansfield, in about1660. Other researchers still claim Mary is Ann's mother, this seemsvery very likely. But as I read it there is little possibility for Maryto be Ann's mother.

The marriage of Ann and Isham Whitecotton seems to have been a short one,Isham probably dying within a couple years of marriage, with MealyWhitecotton being the only child from this union. Following this shemarried John Smith.

I have derived the birthdate of Ann from references in the StaffordCounty court record. Amongst the reasoning for this is that on June 9,1687, her second husband appears in court on her behalf as she is "undrye age of twenty & one yeares", minors not being recognized as havingstanding before the court. But then on July 17, 1687 she signs anarticle of agreement in the dispute over the land once owned by herfather. As she can now appear in court we can assume she has reached theage of majority (21) sometime in the previous month, thus placing herbirthdate in late June/early July 1666.
To take that further if Ann is under 21 in June of 1687, she hasbeen married once (to Isham Whitecotton), bore a child (Mealy), beenwidowed, and remarried (to John Smith) by the age of 20. If she is 20 inJune of 1687 (almost 21), then we can safely assume she has been of childbearing age for an absolute maximum of 6 years. Meaning Mealy was bornno earlier than 1681, and no later than 1686. And as I theorize in theNotes for Mealy, he was born in 1684, which would fit and mean Ann wasabout 18 years old at his birth. As for her marriage to IshamWhitecotton, it would have taken place sometime before this, of course, probably no more than a year or two prior (1682-84). The marriage toJohn Smith would have taken place sometime after, no earlier that 1685but likely in 1686.

See the notes for John Axton and Mealy Whitecotton for more about Ann.
