Isham Whitecotton

( - Bef 1687)

Notes imported from GEDCOM:

Believed to have died young, when Mealy was still a small child.

From this point in the family tree back things go into the realm oflegend. Legend holds that Isham's grandparents were an English couple,John Cotton and Ann White. There son, as was common among the British, took a hyphenated form of this parents' surnames, going by the name"William White-Cotton". William then had a son named Isham who droppedthe hyphen and went by the name Whitecotton as did later generations. Some genealogists, researching the origin of the name, have discoveredthat Whitecotton is a surname that does not occur in any other country, only America. This would tend to support the hyphen legend, and wouldmean that the trail of the paternal surname is found in the name"Cotton", and the maternal in the name "White".
