Joshua (5), s. of John (4), bap. Feb. 22, 1708, m. Nov. 12, 1733, Susannah, dau. of Thomas (2) and Susannah Gleason of Oxford, a niece of Esther, the 1st wife of his bro. Ebenezer (5). In the deed of land at the "Country Gore", which he received from his bro and cousins... Ebenezer (5) signed his name Meriam and Jonathan (5), Hezekiah (5), and Joseph, a witness, signed theirs Miriam.... To this first purchase he added other lands adjoining, and in other parts of the town, some now included in Auburn. He also owned land in Roxbury and Gardner's Canada; the latter being the 60th share of the six miles square "granted by the General Court to the descendants, or legal representatives, of such persons as were in the Canada expedition in the year 1690, under the command of Capt Andrew Gardner." Nov 12, 1751 he received from Lieut.-Gov Phips, Esq., a commission "to be Ensign of the Foot Company in a place called the Country Gore adjoining to Oxford Leicester and Sturbridge under the command of Captain Isaac Hartwell in the first Regiment of Militia in the County of Worcester whereof John Chandler Esq is Colonel." Sept 2, 1754, he received from William Shirley, Esq., "Captain-General and Governour in Chief, in and over His Majesty's Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, &c.," a lieutenant's commission in the same Company of Foot, under command of Captain Jonathan Tucker (bro of Hannah who married John1 Nichols), and Colonel John Chandler, and at the same time he took the oath of allegiance. Gov Shirley also issued to him a commission as lieutenant, June 10, 1755. He was afterwards captain of the same company. He d. June 7, 1784, aged 76 years, and his wid. d. Oct 1, 1788, aged 72 years. The house which he built about 1730, and which received additions by his s. James (6), was torn down by his gr.-s., Samuel (7), on erection of a new one near the same site in 1843, and the panel over the mantel in the palor, on which is painted what tradition says was intended to be a view of the town of Boston at that early day, was preserved... Beneath the roof of this venerable old farm-house were born and reared three grnerations of children of ten each; the b. of the first being Aug 18, 11734, and the last May 20, 1837, a period less than 103 years, only four of whom are now living.

He was born in Lexington, Feb 21, 1707-08, baptized the next day; married Nov 12, 1733, Susanna, daughter of Thomas Gleason, Jr. He owned land in "the Country Gore," Oxford where he lived, and also in "Roxbury and Gardner's Canada," the tract given to those who were in the Canada expedition, under Capt. Andrew Gardner. He was ensign in 1751, lieutenant in 1754. He was captain of North Gore Militia Company, and marched with his command, August, 1757, on the alarm to relieve Fort william Henry; went to Sheffield, and returned. The house he built in 1730 lasted till 1843, and was the birthplace of three generations of ten children each.
He died jun 7 1784. His widow died Oct 1, 1788.

Biography

Joshua Merriam was born on February 21, 1708, in Lexington, Middlesex, Massachusetts [1], to John Merriam 45, and Mary Wheeler 34. He married Susannah Gleason on November 12, 1733, in Oxford, Massachusetts. They had 10 children in 20 years. He died on June 7, 1784, in Worcester, Massachusetts, having lived a long life of 76 years.

"SUSANNAH GLEASON, 5 (Thomas, 4 Thomas, 3 Thomas, 2 Thomas, 1 ) b. Oxford, Jan. 3, 1716; m. Nov. 12, 1733, Joshua, son of John and Mary (Wheeler) Merriam, who was b. in Oxford ; bp. Feb. 22, 1708.
