Karen Annette Hansen

(19 Jul 1890 - 30 May 1985)

Came from Christiana, became Oslo in early 1900s. He came before her on Christmas Day in 1908-09. He didn't have enough money for her to come right away. Came to NY and to relatives in MN and saved money for her to come but not enough for the child who stayed behind and was raised by relatives.
Hardie was child's name. Grandma shunned her when she she visited here in 70's 80's. Aug 1996 Jon and his dad went over there for a simple ceremony for burial of Hardie. Hardie died in April 1996. He died in 1951. Karen died in 1988-91. she was 90 some. Uncle Wally was in Navy and made contact with Hardie and in mid 70s they arranged for her to come over here. Hardie's granddaughter showed them a letter of Karen to Hardie saying don't come.
Karen never went back to Norway. They had Hardie before they were married. The families knew each other...Jon thinks.

Greta's twin daughters said (during a visit in 2017) said Grandma had to wait until she was 21 to come to America. Child couldn't because Norwegian law. After a while they tried to get baby and people who had her would not release her. She had a hard life there and they treated her like a servant.

He had been in the navy and was a barrel maker or such. He hired out to farmers in Winona and later worked in a flour mill. Tried farming in Watoka, south of Winona.

Or spelled Hanson

BIO: Karen was born in Norway, but came to the United States to join her husband in 1911. If someone knows specifically where she was born I would be glad to include this information. She was short 5'2", but a dynamo of energy. Raising 12 children is a great legacy to leave. Many of her grandchildren also stayed with her at 803 Olmstead in Winona while they attended Winona State College. She would clean house for many distinctive Winona citizens (Judge Murphy for one), late into her 70's. She was burned over a large part of her body while she was in her 80's. An average person would have died from such an ordeal, but Karen recovered to live many more years. She spent the last of her years in Houston at the Valley View Nursing Home. (Written on her 90th birthday) As you look back on 90 years, with all its joys and all its tears, You'll see it all has been worthwhile, bring toot her much joy and a smile, Childhood years in Norway fair, things were not good then over there. At age 21, on the Lusitania, you came across to our America. Right on west to Minnesota land where you and Haakon, hand in hand, Began a home and tilled the soil, in those days it was real toil. Then the babies began to come, making it a happy home. Alma, lively and full of pep, making excitement at every step. Florence's laughter seemed to ring, adding sparkle to everything. Little Carl was Daddy's pride, usually found close by his side. Then came Roy, content to be dominated by his siblings three. Wally decided, when very little, that he would not be second fiddle. Next came Hazel, sweet and petite, after three boys, a real treat. Velma, industrious even when small, wouldn't tolerate dirt at all. Esther, studious and wise, know how to calm and organize. Lyle, with a smile like Dad, cheerful and witty, that can't be bad. Evie, the singer, hushing dolls cries, later on sang many lullabies. Carol, the creative one, also always lots of fun. Anita, the baby, the family pet, even today is a sweetheart yet. Hardy helps us in this day to remember our roots are in Norway. 54 grandchildren, good looking and smart, 54 great-grandchildren to warm the heart, And one great-great-grandchild, that's a start. There is so much more we could unfold, remembering happiness so often told. But there are values handed on, and we will continue son to son, Teaching the children to trust in the Lord, and that work itself is its own reward As you read this you must consent, those 90 years have been well spent by Ellinore Ask (1980)
