Block maker=made nautical blocks
Block and pump maker=Two essentials of the wooden shipbuilding industry. Even the best-built vessels experienced seepage through their hulls and thus required reliable hand pumps. No vessel could manage its sails without blocks. A block was a delicate but simple piece of technology. An iron wood pulley - or sheave - was enclosed in a wooden or metal axle, and the casing was held together with 4 bolts. Even the smallest vessel required hundreds of blocks. No sail could be set or adjusted without them.
