John Henry Branham
(Abt 1773 - 8 Jan 1859)
John Henry Branham, the son of David Branham and Frances Basket, was born about 1773 in Virgina and died 8 January 1859 in Wise County, Virginia. John Henry wed 20 January 1794 in Montgomery County, Virginia to Martha "Patsy" Finch, the daughter of Nathaniel Finch and Milly/Molly ?, born about 1772 in Virginia, possibly Fincastle County, and died before 1860 in Wise County, Virginia. Both are buried in the old Branham graveyard at the Whitt Place "Down in the Mountain" (Wise Co., VA)
By the time of her marriage to John Branham, Martha "Patsy" FInch's father was deceased and her mother was married to Jonathan Elswick and gave consent as Molly Elswick for her daughter to wed. This is probably why many have thought Patsy to be "Patsy Elswick", who had first been married to Mt Finch. Prior to her marriage to John H. Branham, Patsy had borne an illegitimate child. Her son, John "Josey" Finch was born 15 May 1787 in Montgomery County, Virginia; his father is unknown but it is doubtful that John Branham was "Josey's" father. Josey Finch married Nancy Bishop, on 17 Mar 1823 in Montgomery County, Virginia.
After their marriage in Montgomery County, John H. and Patsy probably lived there for several years because later records indicate that some of their children were born in Montgomery or Bedford Counties in Virginia. They are found in FLoyd County, Kentucky in 1810 and 1820 Federal census'. By 1830 the are living in Pike County, Kentucky, which was formed from Floyd County. They remanined in Pike County until about 1843. When they sold their property in Pike County, they gave their address as Russell County, Virginia. They are found in the 1850 Federal census of Russell County, Virginia.
The area of Russell County where they lived in 1850 became Wise County shortly thereafter.
According to James Taylor Adams, John H. Branham came to the mouth of Mud Creek (Harold, KY) in Floyd County, lived at Shelby, then Dorton (Pike County) and finally, at Pound (Russell Co., later Wise Co., VA)
