Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2005 at St Augustine's Catholic Church, St Cloud for James C. "Jeff" Hennes, 91, who died at the University Medical Center, Tucson, AZ on December 8, 2005. Bishop John Kinney will officiate. Interment will be in Assumption Cemetery, St Cloud.

Jeff was born on February 21, 1914 in Richmond, MN to the late Lambert P. and Katherine (Lutgen) Hennes. He was a 1936 graduate of St John's University. He married Mary Jo McGerty on September 19, 1940 at St Mary's Cathedral, St. Cloud. She preceeded him in death on August 22, 1976. He married Elizabeth "Betty" (Condon) Putnam on September 26, 1980 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, St Cloud. Jeff was an independent insurance salesman for many years. Jeff was a member of St Augustine's Catholic Church since 1941; member of Kiwanis since 1947; charter member of St Cloud Serra Club; member of St Cloud Eagles Aerie#622; past member and past Exalted Ruler of Elks; member and past Faithful Navigator of the Fr. Pierz Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus; Past President of Library Board; Benton County Commissioner from 1967-1977; Past Chairman of Retired Seniors Volunteer Program; Board Member and Past President of the Mental Health Center; Board Member for nine years of the St Benedict's Center; Ordained a Deacon Diocese of St Cloud on December 12, 1981 and served at St Augustine's Catholic Church; was the former Director of the Assumption-Calvary Cemeteries; member of St John's Alumni Association.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Betty; children: Jeanne (Ken) Howell, Alexandria; Janice (Donald J. "Jim") Williams, Boise, ID; Joyce (Darrell) Becker, Greendale, WI; step-children: Mary Muller, Akeley, MN; Betsy (Jon) Ask, Rochester, MN; William (Sandy) Putnam, Riverbank, CA; 17 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; brothers: Harry of Coeur d"Alene, ID and Serane of Owatonna, MN.

Jeff was preceeded in death by one daughter, Judith Hennes on November 6, 1964; one sister: Collette Beckstrom; brothers: Herbin, Norbert, Oswald and Larry.

Jeff had an Uncle named Dockendorff. He worked on his farm during the summer when he was going to college.


Jeff worked for Jo Bauer. Joe's wife was a sister to mother's Aunt Frances. Bauer owned a granite monument factory.


Judy was 21 when she died.

Jeff and Larry were close brothers. Larry died when he was 94. They had some business dealings together. Larry helped Jeff get his first house.

Deacon Hennes a gifted preacher who related to people of all ages

St.Cloud - A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Deacon James (Jeff) Hennes at 11 a.m., Dec. 17, at St Augustine Church in St Cloud. A vigil service is at 7 p.m., Dec 16, at the Williams Funeral Home in St Cloud.

Deacon Hennes, 91, died Dec 8 at the University Medical Center, Tucson, Ariz.

Ordained Dec 12, 1981, by the late Bishop George Speltz, Deacon Hennes served St Augustine's from 1982 until his retirement from the deaconate in 2001.

Fran Martini, a member of St Augustine's for more than 50 years, said Deacon Hennes was a very involved parishioner prior to his ordination and an outstanding deacon after.

"He had a awesome ability to relate to people of all ages," she said, adding that the deacon's relational talents were particularly enriching to the parish's confirmation program, as he had done a "wonderful job relating to kids that age."

Martini said Deacon Hennes also had a "tremendous ability" to preach, and that she and other parishioners enjoyed seeing him in his frequent role as deacon of the Mass.

Deacon Hennes was born to Lambert and Katherine (Lutgen) Hennes in Richmond on Feb. 21, 1914. A 1936 graduate of St John's University, Collegeville, he worked as an independent insurance salesman in the St Cloud area for many years and later was director of Assumption and Calvary Cemeteries.

A charter member of the Serra Club of St Cloud, he was also a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #961, past Faithful Navigator of the Father Pierz Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and board member of St Benedict's Senior Community.

A member of St John's University Alumni Association, Deacon Hennes was also active in various other civic and fraternal organizations in St Cloud.

Deacon Hennes is survived by his wife, Betty, children Jeanne (Ken) Howell, Alexandria; Janice (Donald J ) Williams, Boise, Idaho; Joyce (Darrell) Becker, Greendale, Wiscaonsin; stepchildren Mary Muller, Akeley, Minn; Betsy (Jon) Ask, Rochester, Minn; William Putnam, Riverbank, Calif.; 17 grandchildren, five great grandchildren and brothers Harry, Coeur dAlene, Idaho, and Serane, Owatonna, Minn. He was preceeded in death by his wife, Mary Jo; daughter, Judith Hennes; sister, Collette Beckstrom; and brothers Herbin, Norbert, Oswald and Larry.
