Indiana Territory granted statehood on 20 Dec 1816 at which time there were no settlers in the future Rush County. On 31 DEc 1821 Rush County was formed. It was named for Dr Benjamin Rush, a signer of 1776 Declaration of Independence. In 1822 Rushville was platted. It became the county sseat of Rush County.

Mauzy is an unincorporated community in Union Twp, Rush County.

New Salem is unincorpoated community in Noble Twp.
