Earl H Payne, former Rushville merchant and banker, died Thursday at the age of 85 years, at his home in Danbury, Conn, according to word received here by Hugh E, Mauzy.
He was born here, a son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Payne. At one time he was a member of the firm of Winship and Payne. For many years he was active in the banking business, serving as president of the former Peoples National Bank and the Peoples Loan and Trust Company.
He was active in all the Masonic bodies in Rushville, past presiding officer in all of them, and a 50-year member of Phoenix Lodge, Rush Chapter, Rushvillw Council, and Rushville Commandery, Knights Templar. Mr Payne was a member of the Scottish Rite and an honorary member of the Supreme Council, 33rd Degree. He was also a life member of the Rushville Elks and Knights of Pythias lodges.
Mr Payne was active in all civic affairs in Rushville, and was the organizer and first president of the Rtary Club here. He left here in 1923 and had since resided in Connecticut.
His wife, the former Grace Frazier, died several years ago, His only immediate survivor is a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Whitlock of Danbury. A brother, Ralph Payne, who was associated with him in the banking business, also preceeded him in death.
Funeral services will be conducted and burial will take place Saturday in Burlington, Vermont, where his wife is interred.
