Sarah or Tarrant or Eliz Putnam or Tarrant

(Abt 1664 - 21 Dec 1705)

Most likely Sarah Tarrant
especially since one of the children was named Tarrant

There is confusion on who this is. The Salem records list his wife's name as Hanna.
But Salem records of child births say Benja[min] and Sarah.
=========
Eben Leaflets p. 3: There is much doubt as to the marriage of Benjamin with a daughter of Thomas Putnam; it is more than likely his first wife was a Tarrant. His second wife was a widow of Benjamin Holton, of Salem Village.
=================
Benjamin's wife was Sarah but don't know her maiden name.
====================
Apparently there is not a birth or marriage record of a Sarah Tarrant in Essex County VR. The name Tarrant does not appear in Savage although the name is in the Essex county VR.

I have evidence of Elizabeth Putnam (not Sarah Elizabeth), (1659-1705), daughter of Thomas Putnam (1614-1686) and Ann Holyoke (1626-1665), marrying Joshua Bayley, but no evidence of marrying a Mr. Tarrant,

Definitely something wrong here. The Sarah Elizabeth Putnam who died in 1705 at Newbury was born as Sarah Tarrant, NOT Putnam.

The Salem town record (from the printed version p 217) reads Putnam, Samuell, s. Nathanyell and Eliza[beth], born 18 : 12m: 1652. CT. R. CT. R indicates taken from the Essex Quarterly Court Records.[1] So 18th day of Feb (12th m) 1652. I suspect (although without a look at the original records I cannot prove) that this date is probably 18 Feb 1652/3. To support my hunch Savage's Genealogical Dictionary lists it as 18 Feb 1653. Anne B
Samuel was baptized at the first church, 17. 2m. 1653 (April 17, 1653).[2]
An inventory of his estate was taken 17th 9 mo., 1676 (Nov 17, 1676)[3]
He married Elizabeth ______ and had Elizabeth b ___ and Samuel bp. at Salem 25 Dec 1687. Elizabeth, the wife, may be the "widow Elizabeth Putnam" who married Benjamin Collins of Lynn, 5 Sep. 1677. They had children: Priscilla, Elizabeth, Benjamin Collins.[3]
Fact: Residence (1652) Massachusetts, United States
Fact: Christening (17 April 1653) Salem, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British Colonial America
Fact: http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch "Samuel Putnam, (Nathaniel, John), of Salem Village, born there 18-12-1652, baptized First Church, Salem, 17-2-1653; died, 1676, Elizabeth_________.
Children: Elizabeth, b.___________. Samuel b._____________; bapt. at Salem, 25 Dec. 1687. Of Samuel Putnam we know nothing except that in inventory of his estate, which amounted to 191-07-03(lb), was taken by Jacob Barney and Joshua Rea, 17th, 9 mo., 1676, and was allowed 29th, 9 mo. 1676. Administration was granted to Elizabeth Putnam, relict. Probably the above Elizabeth is the "widow Elizabeth Putnam" who married Benjamin Collins of Lynn, 5 Sept. 1677. They had: Priscilla, born 2 May 1679; Elizabeth, born 3 January, 1682; Benjamin, born 5 December 1684." (Eben Putnam, Vol 1, p 55) (From published history of the family by Eben Putnam): "Nathaniel Putnam, baptized at Aston Abbotts, 11 Oct. 1619; died at Salem Village, 23 July 1700; married at Salem, Elizabeth, daughter of Richard and Alice (Bosworth) Hutchinson of Salem Village, born 20 Aug., and baptized at Arnold in England, 30 Aug. 1629; died 24 June 1688. In 1648, both Nathaniel and his wife Elizabeth were admitted to the church in Salem. Children, born in Salem Village, (births recorded at Salem): Samuel, Nathaniel, John, Joseph, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Mary. Of these only John, Benjamin, and Mary survived their father. In 1694, Nathaniel and John Putnam testified to having lived in the Village since 1641. Nathaniel Putnam was a man of considerable landed property; his wife brought him seventy-five acres additional and on this tract he built his house and established himself.
Part of this property has remained uninterruptedly in the family. It is now better known as the "old Judge Putnam place." He was constable in 1656, and afterward deputy to the General Court, 1690-91, selectman, and always at the front on all local questions, whether pertaining to politics, religious affairs, or other town matters. 'He had great business activity and ability and was a person of extraordinary powers of mind, of great energy and skill in the management of affairs and of singular agacity, acumen, and quickness of perception. He left a large estate."
"Samuel Putnam, b. Salem Village, 18-12-1652; bapt. 1st Church, 17-2-1653 (Old Style dates, March is the 1st month)" (Eben Putnam p. 22)

This is Capt. Benjamin Putnam's first wife, mother of all his children. Her identity is confused.
Source:Putnam, Eben. History of the Putnam Family in England and America : Recording the Ancestry and Descendants of John Putnam of Danvers, Mass., Jan, p. 58, says that Col. Perley Putnam says that Capt. Benjamin Putnam m. Elizabeth Putnam, d/o Thomas, on 25 Aug 1686. However, this date is the date of birth of son Nathaniel, and Thomas Putnam's widow names the daughter as Elizabeth Bayley in her will. So the identification of Benjamin's first wife as Elizabeth seems pretty much ruled out. Source:Crane, Ellery B. Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Massachusetts, p. 2:55, gives the date 25 Aug 1684 along with the identification of the wife as Elizabeth. The date is not found in Salem VRs, and since there seems to be no evidence for Elizabeth, this date carries no credence. It appears to be too similar to Nathaniel's birth date.
Putnam says the births are "by wife Hanna" but if so, he was clearly looking at a different set of records than the compiler of the VRs, who names the mother as Sarah in all the birth records. The compiler of the VRs also names the first wife as Sarah in her death record 21 Dec 1705. Benjamin then married a second wife, also named Sarah, on 1 Jul 1706.
Source:Danvers Historical Society. Historical Collections of the Danvers Historical Society, p. 10:35, says Benjamin Putnam "apparently" married Sarah Tarrant, "the eldest being given the family name". This is at least consistent with the published records, but clearly this is only speculation and not based on any documentary evidence. Since Tarrant was not the eldest son (Nathaniel was), it is not clear how credible this is. Some newer sources mangle this theory into a wife named Elizabeth Tarrant.

The different names are listed as alternates so that people looking for this page using any of these names, all of which are represented as such in the literature, will find this page. They should be removed when the real name is discovered. Of course, determining the real name will take something more than yet another secondary source speculating who she is
