Coleman joined the Methodist Church at the age of 16; he and his wife Mary Virginia Hicks Coleman joined the Missionary Baptist Church shortly after their marriage; and in 1882 they joined Rock Springs Primitive Baptist Church.Census
The 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Union County, Arkansas shows George Coleman listed in the Paralee Primm household as:overseer, age 21, born in Alabama.
Green Hicks and Henry Hicks are listed just before the Primm household and Elbert Hicks is listed just after it in this census.

In "Coryell County, Texas Families, 1854-1985" the Coleman-Stone article mentions that George W. Coleman was discharged from the Confederate Army on 10-2-1865.An article on G.W. Coleman in "Index, Confederate Veteran" magazine, page 430, gives the following account of his Civil War service:
In the spring of 1861 G. W. Coleman went from AR to AL to enlist in Capt. T. A. Davis' Autauga Rifles, 6th AL Regt. He was discharged due to ill health and returned to AL then went back to AR where he re-enlisted in an AR company of the 5th LA Regt. He served with this company until the end of the Civil War.

The NPS Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Database shows the following history of the 13th Bat. LA Partisan Rangers (also known as the 3rd Cal. Bat.) :
The unit was organized in spring of 1862; skirmishes in LA; merged into Pargoud's 3rd Cal. Regt. during winter of 1963-1864 and assigned to the Trans-Mississippi Dept., this unit skirmished in LA until March of 1864 when it was designated the 5th LA Cal. Regt.; as the 5th LA Cal Regt. the unit saw light action in LA and disbanded in spring of 1865.
The 5th LA Cal. Regt. was in the Battle of Mansfield in March-April of 1864 that was the decisive battle of the Union Army's Red River Campaign and resulted in the Union withdrawing from the region.
Additional information concerning George W. Coleman's Civil War service from Confederate Pension Records of:
T. J. Franks -George W. Coleman testified that he served in the 5th LA Cal., Co. G with T.J. Franks who served in the same unit, Co. F.
Mary Virginia Coleman -T. J. Franks and C. M. Casey testified that George W. Coleman was a 1st Lt. and then a Capt. and that GWC served in the 6th AL Inf. and the 25th LA Cal.
Mary Virginia Coleman -T. J. Franks testified that George W. Coleman served from 1863-64 to end of Civil War; he saw GWC in the battles of Manfield and Pineville as a Capt. near Alexandria, LA.

Coleman's Civil War service in Alabama are summarized from the digital images of muster roll microfilm, transcripts, and historical information found in "Alabama Civil War Muster Rolls, 1861-1865" database at Ancestry.com.From the 6-2 to 6-30, 1861 Muster Roll for the 6th AL Inf., Co. L (Capt. Thomas A. Davis, Col. J.J. Seibles):
The unit was organized in Independence, AL on 4-27-1860 as the Autauga Rifles; unit was accepted by AL governor on 4-28-1861 and ordered to Corinth, MS on 5-22-1861; company left Montgomery, AL on -30-1861 and mustered into service in Corinth on 6-2-1861; left Corinth on 6-8-1861 and arrived at Manassas Junction [VA] on 6-15-1861; then went to Sangser's Cross Roads on 6-22-1861 and camped until 6-30-1861; from 28-30 June, 1861 a scouting party made up of men from the 6th AL Inf. and another VA unit attacked pickets of the enemy and dispersed them, one Confederate was killed and 11 enemy killed, this action was on Pike's River.
George W. Coleman was present for this Muster Roll and received $11 in pay.
From the 6-30 to 7-31, 1861 Muster Roll for the 6th AL Inf., Co. L :
On 7-17-1861 while stationed at Sangster's Cross Roads with three other companies and two companies of VA Cal. word came that a large number of enemy were approaching; Co. L got fire at the enemy but three men but were taken prisoner; the company fell back to [Inman's ?] Hill on Bull Run; on 7-18-1861 the company deployed on through Manassas City to defend the ford against the passage of the enemy; company stayed there until 7-21-1861 then ordered at about two o'clock [AM] to cross river in direction of Centerville to attack the enemy, but were soon ordered back to Stone Bridge and arrived at the battlefield [Manassas I] about sundown, the enemy had retreated and the company marched back to original position of defending the ford by nine o'clock [PM], the company marched over 20 miles that afternoon.
George W. Coleman was present for this Muster Roll, but was reported sick for the Manassas I Battle; it is not known how much participation he had in his company's activity preparing for this battle.
A report from Union Mills, VA for October 1861 for the 6th AL Inf. Co. L shows that George W. Coleman was present.
George W. Coleman was discharged from 6th AL Inf. on 2-28-1862 due to disability. There is no indication that he had a lasting disability and he re-enlisted when he returned to his home in Ouachita County, Arkansas.
Marriage
The township of Van Buren is assumed since Mary Virginia's parents lived there and George Washington lived there before the Civil War.Marriage is recorded in Union County, Arkansas Marriage Book B, page 326 B.

From Coryell County, Texas Deed Records, Vol. N, page 279-280:On 8-21-1879. G.W. Coleman bought 210 acres of the Tobias Kelly Survey for $2500.
Terms were three notes for: $1000 due 1-1-1880; $740 due 1-1-1881; and $760 due 1-1-1882.

He paid $67.50 in cash and a note payable on 12-25-1882, for an additional $67.50.
The note was paid on 8-1-1882.
This land bordered on the railroad property on the west side.

Johnson sold 202 and 8/10 acres of the Tobias Kelley Survey and 184 and 1/4 acres of the Mary Hawley Survey to G.W. Coleman for $10,000, paid in cash and property equal in value to $10,000.
These are the same tracts of land purchased from N.V. and J.B. Hood on 11-26-1906 and recorded in Vol. 45, page 167.

J. E. Johnson and wife M. F. Johnson agree to allow G. W. Coleman and wife M. V. Coleman to live in the home of J. E. Johnson and wife M. F. Johnson the remainder of their natural lives.
If at any time the Colemans desire to have their own house the Johnsons will build one for them at any location selected by the Colemans at an expense of no more than $500.00.
The agreement remains in effect as long as either of the spouses lives and can be terminated by the Colemans if conditions are not met by the Johnsons.
The tracts of land are 135 acres of Mary Hawley Survey and 210 acres of Tobias Kelly Survey in Coryell County, Texas.

Johnson had complied with all requirements set out in an agreement made on 11-28-1913 [Johnsons to provide home and support for the Colemans in exchange for two tracts of land] and for $5 the Colemans officially transferred ownership of 135 acres of land in the Mary Hawley Survey and 210 acres in the Tobias Kelley Survey to the Johnsons.
