Individual Details
Peter Hitt
(1683 - 23 Mar 1772)
One of original settlers of Germanna. Controvery exists over whether or not this Peter Hitt is the same as a Peter Heite found in Germany; there are several reasons to doubt that he is. Johann Jacob Heite, born about 1660 of Siegen, Germany was the father of Peter Heite who married Maria Liessbeth Freudenberg (age 33 at the time of the marriage) in Rehback, Siegen, Germany. There are no records of children in Germany and her age makes it extremely doubtful that she could be the wife Elizabeth of Peter Hitt of Germanna who outlived her husband and birthed at least six children in America. Maria could have died and Peter remarried but no records have been found of this either. There is no record of the marriage of Peter to an Elizabeth - the marriage to Elizabeth Otterbach is assumed, not proven.
From Genealogical & Historical Notes on Culpeper Co VA by Raleigh Travers Green, c1958; p.44: In his will of 1771, Peter names John, Joseph, Herman, Peter, Mary wife of Jacob Rector.
