Josiah Flynn

(1797 - 1865)

I'll believe he was born about 1797. And, I believe he was a son of Thomas, not Laughlin Flynn as often seen. There are records of what appears to be two men named Josiah Flynn - one later found in Morgan Co would be more likely Laughlin's son.

NC Marriage Bond: Josiah Flin to Caty Moser, 12 Feb 1817, Stokes Co. Thomas Flyn, bondsman. Wit: M.W.B. Armstrong.

Flinn book says moved to Greene Co IN in Nov, 1830.

Found with most members of his family in Greene Co IN in 1850.
The Flinn & Hall books give a daughter Milly born in NC in 1818 and married to Israel Long on 14 Mar 1836. The marriage record does exist. However, in the 1850 Census is Israel Long and his wife is Pamelia [Milly could work as a nickname] born in 1816 in NC, making her a bit old to be a child of Josiah & Catherine who married in 1817. The oldest child is 11 and there is no significant gap between children to suggest a 2nd wife for Israel Long. The apparent daughter of Josiah & Catherine named Catherine, age 13, living at home in 1850 was omitted from the Flinn book but included by Hall.

Possible Black Hawk War Service. A Josiah Flinn is listed as a Private on the Muster Roll of Capt. Julius L. Barnsback's Company of Mounted Volunteers, commanded by Brig. Gen. Samuel Whitesides, mustered into service at Beardstown, Illinois, on 28th Apr 1832. 120 miles from the place of enrollment. Enrollment was at Edwardsville, which is in Madison Co, IL.
John J. Hardin was the Inspector and Mustering Officer that countersigned the muster roll. It is said to be in his handwriting.
Another roll made out on May 28 gives the place of the muster-out to the place of enrollment as 284 miles. A property roll, dated 27 Apr at Beardstown also exists. Both of these rolls list Joseph Flinn, rather than Josiah Flynn. As Josiah was most likely in Morgan Co along with his brother Zadock, this may well be a different man.

An Armisted Flynn also lived in Greene Co - or at least he married there on 4 Jul 1844 to Angeline Lewis. This was the same day of the marriage of Mary Ann Flinn to Chrisman Lewis. The possibility of children from a different Flynn/Flinn family should be considered. The author of the Flinn book thought perhaps Josiah's brother George had an earlier marriage with a child/children. This would seem to fit.
