18 Jun 1846. Joel H. Haden sold to Martha's brother, James H. Haden, several lots in Fayetteville and several slaves in possession of Martha's husband James Shirley. The slaves were a man Jerry, woman Lucinda and her child Nancy, a girl Eliza about age 9 and a girl Maria about age 7. Martha was to have use of them during her lifetime and afterward they were to become the sole property of her children. Howard Co DB W, p.251
Apparently he wanted to make sure Martha's husband could not dispose of the slaves.

6 Dec 1867. John S. Haden as plaintiff sued the following heirs of Martha Shirley (deceased) in circuit court - James A. Shirley Jr., Iberia S. Mennifee whose husband was Robert M. Mennifee, and Martha A. Bostwick. Circuit Court Book 14:170
25 Jul 1868. Joel H. Haden's heirs were named in a deed clarifying that his son John S. Haden had inherited real property. Heirs named were Charles A. Haden, James H. Haden, [Charles & James were living sons of Joel] James A. Shirley [husband of deceased daughter Martha], Martha E. Cooper, Joel H. Cooper, James Cooper [Children of deceased daughter Ann], James A. Shirley Jr., Iberia S. Minnifee, Robert M. Minnifee, Horatio A. Bostwick and Martha A. Bostwick [these last three were the living children of Martha, deceased]
