Joseph Morton

Joseph Morton, son of John Morton, Jr. was a surveyor, employed by the Randolph family to survey their land. Possibly lived in the following counties: Orange, Amelia, Louis, Charlotte & Prince Edward. Before the marriage to Agnes Woodson, Joseph is believed to have been married to a Miss Goode [probably Mary] by whom he had one daughter, Mary who married a Price.

Joseph eventually settled at Little Roanoke Bridge in 1745 - in the area of Halifax Co that became Charlotte Co. He was founder of the Briery Presbyterian Church, a trustee of Hampden Sidney College. Joseph served as justice of the peace of Charlotte Co in 1769.

p.68 6 May 1765 Joseph Morton & James Anderson of Chesterfield, executors of the last will & testament of Richard Austin, sell to Thomas Scott of Prince Edward. 970 acres in Charlotte Co on Terrys Run, a branch of Cub Creek. Part of 1570 acres granted sd Austin, 16 Aug 1756.
p. 151 15 Jan 1766 Joseph Morton SR to Charles Harris. 160 acres Wards Fork. Came to Morton by deed from James Heath. Wit: Josiah Morton, Butler Buckley, Little Joe Morton. Rec. 4 Aug 1766.
p. 199 24 Mar 1767 Joseph Morton to Thomas Scott of Prince Edward. 200 acres along Terrys Run. Bounded by Thomas Scott, John Thomas, Wm Ledderdale. Part of Richard Austin's tract sold to Francis Cooke and by said Cooke to Morton. Wit: James Carter, Bridge (X) Braithford, Robert Carter. Rec. 6 Apr 1767.
