Thomas Morton

( - )

A Thomas is not usually seen as a son of John Morton Jr. - yet there was a Thomas Morton living near John's sons John, Steven & Samuel. He creates records at a time that Thomas, brother of John Morton Jr, was already deceased - and yet too early to be those of that Thomas's son of the same name.

Virginia Land Grant:
9 Feb 1737 Thomas Moreton granted 126 acres in Amelia Co between William Fuqua's and William Mayo's lines, by Joseph Watson to a corner white oak marked "JM". Description refers to Robert Fuqua. PB 17, p.509
This land was near that of John Morton Jr's brother Joseph.

21 Jun 1740 Thomas Morton of Amelia Co deeded to John Short of James City Co, 126 acres patented to Morton on 9 Feb 1737.
This Thomas signed with his "mark". Thomas, son of Thomas, who lived on Briery River could sign his name.

15 Feb 1744/45 Joseph Morton Sr of Brunswick Co to Thomas Morton, 225 acres in Amelia Co on fork of lower fork of Sandy River begin at said Joseph Morton's old line, crossing fork of river to Daniel Hamlin's line, part of a 353 acre tract.
[This Joseph signed with his mark - backwards capital E - and was the brother of John Morton Jr, or uncle to this Thomas if he was a son of John Morton, Jr.]

About 1749, the two Thomas Morton's begin to appear in the records of Amelia Co with "Sr" and "Jr". They were likely cousins with this Thomas being some years older.

Prince Edward Co was formed from Amelia Co in 1753.

1 May 1761. Thomas Morton of Prince Edward granted to his son George, 100 acres, St. Patrick Parish on the Sandy River, bounded by the widow Ligon's, part of land Joseph Ligon bought from Joseph Morton. Rec. 11 aug 1763

13 Aug 1771 Thomas Morton Sr of St Patrick Parish, Prince Edward Co sold to George Morton and his wife Hannarita, 100 acres on the Sandy River in Prince Edward adj Thomas Morton, John Hamblin, William King, Joseph Ligon. Thomas Morton Jr. was one of the witnesses. Rec. 12 Jan 1772
This leaves Thomas with only 25 acres. I suspect by this time, Thomas Jr. is his son.

14 Aug 1784 John Holloway of Prince Edward to Thomas Morton Sr, for 5 #'s paid to Samuel Morton, 10 acres adj Thomas Morton's corner, John Barnes line. Rec. 16 Aug 1784
Samuel likely another son.

8 Oct 1790 Thomas Morton of Prince Edward to "Joseph Siah" [Josiah] Morton, for love & affection to this son, 35 acres on Sandy River adj Thomas Scott, Nathan Penick, & Samuel Morton. Rec. 18 Oct 1781.
The 35 acres account for all the land.

Apparently Thomas Morton had another tract of land:
11 Jan 1792 Thomas Morton Sr. & Samuel Morton, both of Prince Edward to John Clark Jr., 190 acres of land, branches of Sandy River on the lines of Josiah Morton, Nathan Penn, Scott & Hamblin. Signed Thomas [x] Morton, Samuel Morton. Levicy, Samuel's wife relinquished dower. Rec. 18 Jun 1792.

Records that likely belong to his son, Thomas, Jr.
13 Aug 1771 George Morton, St. Patrick Parish, Prince Edward, to Thomas Morton Jr., 134 acres in Prince Edward adj William Davisson, Thos. Crafford, Rial Bowman, the Church Road. Signed by George & Hanahrittah Morton

22 Nov 1771 Thomas Morton Jr., St Patrick Parish, Prince Edward, to John Richards, 134 acres, lower side of Sandy River, adj Gravelly's line and lands Richards bought from William Davidson; part of land granted to Royal & John Sutton Bowman and sold to George Morton and then to said Thomas. Rec. 18 May 1772 [This Thomas also signed with his mark. An Elizabeth Morton married Royal Bowman - and Thomas Morton gave consent - she would appear to be a duaghter.]

20 Apr 1789 John Clarke Jr of Prince Edward to Thomas Morton Jr, 78 acres adj Donald's line, Scott's corner
9 Oct 1792 Thomas Morton and wife Cate to Thomas Broadway, 78 acres on Little Branch, sdj Thomas Scott, Thomas Penick, and Robert Donald.

19 Jan 1793 Josiah Morton of Prince Edward to Thomas Morton, 25 acres adj Nath. Penick, Thomas Scott, sd Morton, John Clarke dec'd.
24 May 1794 Thomas Morton to William King. 25 acres on Sandy River adj Thomas Scott & Thomas Penick.

21 Dec 1792 William Chambers of Person Co NC sells to Thomas Morton, 20 acres on Marlows Crk, bordering Harrelson. One of the witnesses was William (X) Morton. Person Co DB A, p.96

1 Mar 1797 Ezekiel Harralson of Person Co to Thomas Morton of Person Co, 15 acres on Marlows Creek.

1 Mar 1800 Thomas Morton of Person Co sold to Paul Haralson, 4 3/4 acres on west bank of Marlows Creek, near the fork.

In the 1800 Person Co Census is found a Catherine Molton [Morton?].
