R. Ross Roby, 88, a psychiatrist who practiced for many years in Philadelphia, died Sunday of lung cancer at Jeanes Hospital.
He had been a resident of the Crosslands retirement community in Kennett Square.
Dr. Roby, who was born in Rochester, NY, earned a bachelor's degree in English from Yale University in 1937. A conscientious objector during World War II, he performed his alternative service at Byberry State Psychiatric Hospital, where his experiences led him to a career in psychiatry.
Dr. Roby earned a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1950, then began private practice in the Germantown section of the city after completing a residency at the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital in west Philadelphia.
From about 1955 to 1965, he also practiced at the Mercer County Child Guidance Clinic in Trenton and the Northeast Community Center for Mental Health on the grounds of Friends Hospital.
He retired to Bluemount, VA, in 1981, then returned to the Philadelphia region in 1995.
....He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Juliet; a daughter Kate; sons Nicholas, Daniel and Thomas; and five grandchildren.
