Juliet Dulany Roby, 87, of Kennett Square, an artist and quaker activist, died of a strok June 18 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Roby's sculptures, pastel landscapes, mobiles and dreamcatchers had been exhitited in galleries in Philadelphia, Washington, and Virginia.
A native of Washington, she studied art at the Corcoran Gallery there. She met her future husband, R. Ross Roby, while she was taking premed courses at the University of Pennsylvania and he was a medical student. Her daughter, Kate, said that in 1946, her mother gave up the opportunity to attend the Women's MedicalCollege of Pennsylvania to marry.
The Robys raised four children in Germantown, where he had a psychiatry practice, and she pursued her art in a home studio and attended classes at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
In 1980, she and her husband retired to Clarke County, VA. They moved to Crosslands, a retirement community in Kennett Square, in 1995. Her husband died in 2002.
Mrs. Roby was a lontime member of the Germantown Monthly Meeting and had served on the executive committee of the Friends Conference of Religion and Psychology. She had been a volunteer for the Friends Services Committee and studied mysticism at Pendle Hill, a Quaker study ceneter in Wallingford.
Her daughter said Mrs. Roby enjoyed travel and had a special interest in Eastern religions and American Indian culture. For more than 30 years, she supported American Indian students through the Futures for Children Friendship Program.
In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Roby is survived by three sons, Nicholas, Daniel, and Thomas; a brother; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held June 22 at Crosslands.
