Alice Roby Dies at 91, UR Donor
Mrs. Alice Montgomery Rogers Roby, 91, the widow of Dr. Joseph Roby and Great-granddaughter of Col. Nathaniel Rochester, the city's founder, died Monday, May 18, 1970, at her home, 234 Culver Road.
Mrs. Roby was the daughter of Clinton and Fannie Rochester Rogers and granddaughter of Henry and Jane Hart Rochester. Her mother was Sophia Beatty Rochester.
Last month, Mrs. Roby gave to the University of Rochester Library a collection of letters found recently in the attic of her home. Among them were letters to members of her family from John Masefield, England's poet laureate from 1930 to his death in 1967; Samuel F. B. Morse, inventor of the telegraph; Claude Bragdon, architect and stage designer who lived here many years; and novelist Hugh Walpole and Paul Horgan.
Mrs. Roby was an 1879 graduate of the Master School at Dobbs Ferry.
Among the organizations to which she gave financial support were the Sigl Center of Elmwood Avenue, American Friends Service Committee in Philadelphia, Bershire Home for Boys, Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester Civic Music Association, United Negro College Fund, the University of Rochester, and the Planned Parenthood Legue of Rochester and Monroe County. She was a life member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church of which her great-grandfather was the first vestryman.
