Josephine Gentry

(1841 - 26 Jul 1923)

Marion County Herald
Marion, Missouri
27 Jul 1923
Josephine Carr, colored, passed away at the County Infirmary yesterday morning. Josephine has been living at the infirmary since December 23rd, 1920. She was there as a private patient.
The death of this old colored woman removes a figure which has been identified with the city for a number of years. In the years of her strength she made a specialty of doing fancy washing for the elite of the city. Her husband was the late Harrison Carr, who served in the army under the name of Harrison Williams, and also at one time shot his wife, for which he served a term of four years in the Missouri Penitentiary. The Carr woman grew up on the lot that is now owned by Joe McClintic and she later purchased property just east of the residence of T.L. Martin. About ten years ago Josephine went blind and as it was impossible for her to live alone she was sent to the infirmary.
Daughter of David and Mariah Gentry [Maria Brooks}
