Maria Brooks
(1801 - Jan 1877)
Newspaper clipping;
We make respectful mention of the fact that an aged colored woman named Maria Brooks, one of the oldest inhabitants of Palmyra, died and was buried in the city cemetery last week, surrounded by those who sincerely mourn her loss. Maria knew her place and kept it. She was respected by white and black, and we bear public testimony of her worth, and present her example of industry, modesty, frugality, morality and general good behavior to her race as every way worthy of their imitation.
