Agnes Clopton

(1772 - )

The following deed made by the heirs of Benjamin Clopton makes no provision for a daughter Agnes. A daughter must have been married to John Bernard, but it was most likely the older sister Elizabeth. There is no baptism record for Agnes and I'm not sure there was a daughter of this name - she was the only one for which there was no baptism record. She could of course, died as a young child. She would likely have been a minor at the time of this deed, and would have required a guardian to sign for her, as Bernard did for Anthony Clopton.

Databases, including the Clopton Chronicles state that Agnes married Thomas Shackelford, 21 Jul 1804, Sumner Co, TN. [This seems to be rather an unlikely time and place and doesn't explain where Agnes was in 1791 when the above deed was made & signed.] He was a son of James Shackelford and Mary Stamm, born June 1, 1776 in probably Prince William County, Virginia, and died June 17, 1835 in Salem County, Missouri. Agnes is said to have died before 1817. Children are said to be:
Drucilla, b. 1806, Nashville
Robert, b. 1807, Nashville
James Orville, b. 1809, Nashville
William Clopton Shackelford, b. 18 Jan 1812
