HANNIBAL - Audie Grover Barnett, 90, of Hannibal, died at 5:15 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at Smith Funeral Home. The Rev. Christine Walsh will officiate. Military honors will be led by the American Legion.Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services Sept. 23 at the funeral home.Mr. Barnett was born Nov. 19, 1911, near Rocky Comfort to Grover Lee and Mary Elizabeth Houser Barnett.He was married to Gertrude Kurz on June 29, 1935, in Bethany. She survives.Also surviving are one son, Donald Barnett and wife, Charlotte Lackey, of Asheville, N.C.; two daughters, Martha Hollcroft and husband, Jim, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Bev Darr of Hannibal; five grandsons, Brad Darr of Charleston, Ill., Jeff Darr and wife, Jane, of Hannibal, Mike Darr and wife, Lisa, of Hannibal, Wes Hollcroft and wife, Josephine, of San Diego, Calif.; and Mark Barnett and wife, Gina, of Tempe, Ariz.; six great-grandchildren, Julia Darr of Rockford, Ill., and Jay Darr, Jessie Darr, Jeremy Darr, Jennifer Darr and Jason Darr, all of Hannibal; and three stepgreat-granddaughters of Tempe.He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ivan Barnett and Dr. Floyd Barnett; and one sister, Cynthia Leathers.Mr. Barnett graduated from Stella High School and received a bachelor's degree in agriculture and a master's degree in education from the University of Missouri in Columbia. He taught vocational agriculture for six years before serving with the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater as an infantry officer.After the war he resumed teaching vocational agriculture, with two years at Palmyra High School and 26 years at Hannibal High School, where he retired in 1973. He then sold and managed real estate for another 20 years. He had lived in Hannibal for 55 years.Mr. Barnett's military service continued for many years after World War II. With the National Guard, he was captain of the 35th Military Police Co. of Hannibal. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve until retiring at age 60.As a life member and past commander of the Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post No. 55, he had served in numerous positions, including 44 years in the oratorical contest program, and leading the local Boys State program for 40 years.Mr. Barnett was a member of the Hannibal City Council from 1967 to 1971. He was a member and elder emeritus at First Christian Church in Hannibal. He also was a member of Masonic organizations including the blue lodge, Scottish Rite and the Shrine. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Missouri and a member and past president of the Hannibal Kiwanis Club.Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post. No. 55.
