PARIS ­ Dr. Floyd Aaron Barnett, 90, of Paris, died June 22, 2000, at Audrain Medical Center in Mexico.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 25, at the First Christian Church in Paris. The Rev. Jonelle Loehnig will officiate. Burial will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Paris.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the church. The Agnew Funeral Home in Paris is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Barnett was born April 19, 1910, in Rocky Comfort to Grover and Elizabeth Houser Barnett.
He was married to Rita Sue Spears on Feb. 14, 1937. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, Dr. Richard Barnett of Shreveport, La.; one daughter, Ellen Niederschulte of Mexico; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Audie Barnett of Hannibal.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Cynthia Leathers; and one brother, Ivan Barnett.
Dr. Barnett graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia and Washington University in St. Louis. He began his practice at the Fulton State Hospital and then moved to Paris to take over the practice of Dr. Harry Payne in November 1938. During his practice in Paris, he delivered approximately 1,400 babies, making his last delivery in 1967. He was known for his painless shots, with the gift of a stick of Juicy Fruit gum. He practiced medicine in Paris for 61 years, retiring on Dec. 31, 1999.
He was an active member of the community. He had been chairman of the board of the Paris National Bank, mayor of the city of Paris from 1957 to 1969, and was active in Rotary, the Progressive Club and Shriners. He was an elder, deacon and head of the Elders Fund of the First Christian Church of Paris. He was a charter member of the Mark Twain Country Club and served as architect for the golf course. He enjoyed sports, including bowling, softball and golf. He and his wife established three scholarships for seniors at the Paris High School.
