Oscar D. Casteel, age 74, of Tazewell, Tenn., was born on April 26, 1934 and died on January 20, 2009 at his home after a short illness. He was born in the Smith community in Harlan County, and was the son of the late John D. and Lilly Mae (Depew) Casteel. He married Shirley M. Massingill) Casteel on October 4, 19 55. Oscar was a Korean War veteran of the United States Marine Corp. and a retiree from General Motors. He was a member of the UAW retiree's club and the North Tazwell Volunteer Fire Department, and an active volunteer with Home Health building decks and ramps for the handicapped and elderly in Claiborne County and the surrounding area. He is a member of the Church of God Assembly of New Tazwell, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his father, John D. Casteel; mother, Lilly Mae (Depew) Casteel; sister, Thelma Kelly and daughter-in-law, Dora Casteel.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley M. (Massingill) Casteel, of Tazwell, Tenn.; sons, John Casteel, of Galion, Oh., Thomas and wife Debbie Casteel, of New Tazwell, Tenn. and Oscar Jr. and wife Rhonda Casteel, of Galion, Oh.; daughter, Sandra Combs, of North Robinson, Oh.; sister, Ada Mayfield, of Galion, Oh.; grandchildren, Bridget and husband Jeff Klingenberger, of Bucyrus, Oh., Jodie and husband Kevin Frye, of Bucyrus, Oh., Tracy and husband Ricky Rehberg, of Bucyrus, Oh., Johnny Casteel, of Galion, Oh., Thomas Casteel Jr., of New Tazwell, Tenn., Brandi and husband Jeremy Riggs, of Clinton, Tenn., Kris Combs, of North Robinson, Oh., Megan Casteel, of Galion, Oh., Tyler Casteel, of Galion, Oh., and 13 great-grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday, January 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Claiborne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 23 at 1 p.m. in the Claiborne Funeral Home chapel with the Reverend Kenneth Massingill officiating. Music will be provided by Don Massingill, Brenda Bertam, John and Paula Keefer and Jodie Bryant. Burial will follow in the Moody Cemetery with military honors.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Claiborne Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
