Undated list (prior to 1779 when Elijah married) signed by David Mitchell - only a few of the early lists included slaves' names: David Mitchel, esqr. so. Elijah, John Duncan. Negroes: Will, Harculous, Santy, Robin, Toby, Roger, George, Peter, Prymus, Isom, Cate, Rynor, Sarah, Jenny, Suke, Care, Agg, Nell, Cate. 3 whites, 19 blacks.

Tax list for the Third District - undated but follows a 1792 list - these lists are in horrific condition and barely readable - even the column headings:

other Mitchells: James, Major, and Hannah - Hannah had 1284 acres, 13 slaves.

Last Will of David Mitchell of Graville, North Caroline. Executors to pay all just debts. To beloved wife Hannah all livestock, crops, household furniture, plantation tools and the use of my land whereon I now live during her natural life. Also lend the use and lobour of my Negroes Harcules, Matt, Vilot, Robin, Jinney, Roger, Sarah, Creasey and Ned. At her death the Court to amount three or more good men to value & appraise for them to be equally divided among my children & for them to cast lots for their choice.
To my son Elijah Mitchel, Five Shillings
To my son Charles Mitchell the tract of land that he lives on & that Demsey Moore makes a good deed to Charles for the land
To my daughter Martha Walker, Five Shillings
To my Daughter Susannah Moore, Five Shillings
To my daughter Elizabeth Sanders, Five Shillings

to son David Mitchel, tract of land in Caswell Co purchased of John Wilson, 640 acres, and another tract in same county purchased of Francis Browning, 137 acres. Negro man Ben, Negro Girl Jenney and boy Joe - they are to remain in possesion of my wife until David arrives at age 21 or marrisd.
To son Thomas Mitchel, after the death of my wife, half of the tract I now live on. Boy name Phill, girl named Nanney and boy Jack - to reamin with my wife until Thomas is 21 or marries.
To Son John Mitchel, after the death of my wife, half of the tract I now live one. Negro man Santey his wife, Great Cate, and all her increase - to remain with my wife until John is 21 or marries.
After the death of my wife Hannah, the Court to appoint tree good men to divide the tract of land I now live on to be divided equally between my sons Thomas nad John - John to have first choice.
My Executors to contract with Elijah Moore concercerning Negro boy Jim that is in his possession, to make him satisfaction re the claim he has against me respecting the land I sold him where he now lived. If they cannot agree, they are to sell him for the best price, the money to be applied to discharge of my debts.
Executors are to sell the tract I purchased of John Wilson of Caswell County, 195 acres, to be appied to payment of y debts. Impowered to do anything respecting my NinetySix Land they think best or any part of the Estate best spared to make payment to my creditors. My Executors or Guardians to my children to take particular care to educate them in the best manner their estates afford.
Appoint my wife Hannah Mitchel Executrix, and sons Elijah Mitchell & Charles Mitchell my Executors.
