On December 4, 1860, he married Laurinda A. Vanhoy and together, they had four children: May E., Priscilla E., John M., and Clara A. May appears to have died in childhood, as she is identified in the 1870 census as seven years old, but does not appear in census records after 1870.

He was mustered into service as a private with Company H, 7th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry on August 18, 1863 in Sedalia, Missouri and was discharged April 26, 1865 for disability.
On April 22, 1899, Levi's wife of 38 years, Laurinda, had passed away. By 1902, he had met and married Anna E (Lowe) Shepherd. She was also on her second marriage and had sic children from her first marriage. Levi passed away June 30, 1925 in Kansas City, Missouri. Anna had passed away three years earlier on May 8, 1922.
