Joshua was the sixth, and youngest, child of Samuel and Elizabeth (Nap) Covey, born July 18, 1796 in Virginia. His father was a Revolutionary War soldier from New York and Virginia. His siblings were Rachel, Joseph, Samuel, James, and William H.
On June 1, 1815, Joshua married Lydia Adamson and together, they had 13 children between 1816 and 1842: Elizabeth, Martha, Enoch, Hester, Samuel Edward, Priscilla, Nancy, Susannah, William B., Jacob, Levi, Lucian, and John Isaac. Lydia died in April 1855 after nearly 40 years of marriage.
By 1840, Joshua and his family had moved to Pettis County, Missouri. He passed away April 19, 1873 in Henry County, Missouri, aged 76 years.
