Granville, NC Will Book 23, P.528
25 Jan 1879 Will of Elvirah Wheeler. (James' mother-in-law) There was a strange bequest in this will. She gave to her "grand daughter Elvira Critcher, daughter of Jas. T. Critcher (if he has a daughter of that name) if not to his oldest daughter, one coverlett". It is apparent there was as yet no such daughter - no daughter named Elvira appears with the widowed Hannah in the 1900 census, nor in later records. Perhaps Hannah was pregnant when when Elvirah Wheeler wrote her will and the child did not survive. After several small bequests to granchildren, Elvirah, stated the remainder was to be sold, just debts and personal expenses be paid, and then divided equally between her children: Eliza J. Smith, Dudley W. Wheeler, Elizabeth M. Guy, Hannah Critcher, Harried T. Stanfield, and Lurcena Stark. Son Dudley to be her Executor. Signed by her mark. Wit: John G. Harris, Archibald Carmichael.
The witnesses proved the will 7 May 1885. Dudley Wheeler qualified as Executor, 11 May 1885.
