David left Tennessee for the first time with his mother and 10 brothers and sisters to raise cotton in Alabama. In 1820 difficult times led to David and others of his family to return to Tennessee, in Warren Co., but in 1834, David moved from Warren Co., TN back to AL (Clarke Co. )with others, including a Levi Meadows. H and Jane had 12 children, 2 of whom reportedly had died in earl y. John Ingram and family, also from TN, came in 1836. When these families settled there they found abundant game, especially bears, deer and wild turkey. There were also black wolves and huge rattlesnakes some as long as 7 feet . (notes from Linda Bologna of Irving, TX) [Correspondence from Tresha Gassman (Moonjagaol.com)]

1830 Federal Census in Warren Co. TN finds a David Byrd with the following: males 5-10: 3, 15-20: 3, 50-60: 1 and females 10-15: 2, 40-50: 1. There are just 8 children shown. It is possible that Isaiah was not born until after the census in 1830 and Joseph, who was supposed to have died quite young, was born in 1832-1833, Jane would still have been under 50. Jesse would have to have been counted in the 5 to 10 group, if this is the right David Byrd. This is possible because on later census reports Jesse's age is given such that a birthdate from 1820-1822 can be calculated, however he was supposed to be 80 when he died in December, 1899.
Although circumstantial evidence points to David as the father of Jesse , Isaiah and Joseph, proof of this so far does not exist. While it seems certain their grandparents were Richard and Elizabeth Buster Byrd, it i s possible their father was a brother of David, either Charles or Richard . about whom little is known. The families and movements of the other brothers do not fit. For now David will remain the "placeholder" fa ther , whose sons geographical moves and burial sites are identical to Jesse and Isaiah. We know Joseph died early in Alabama after an injury sus tained in the Mexican American War, but this again is a parallel to David's so n, Pleasant, who also fought in the Mexican American War. but survived to move to Visalia, CA
