Individual Details

Elizabeth Sargent

( - )

Married name said to be Clinton, but that is apparently an error. No child of this name was mentioned in the will of Lemuel Sargent, 1820; possibly she was deceased.

In other places, a daughter of Lemuel named Elizabeth is said to have married Benjamin or Barnabas Bates, brother to Tamar Bates that married Lemuel Sargent Jr. That is also a problem because some say that before 1800, Barnabas had married Betsey Hedges. Barnabas said to have served in the Revolution and drawn a pension.

Barnabas Bates was christened, 28 Nov 1760, Attleboro, Bristol, MA. Parents were Simeon & Abigail Bates.

I have a subscription to Fold3.com so looked up Barnabas Bates' Revolutionary Pension.  Does not solve the problem of the Betseys he was married to.
However, here are some interesting facts gleaned from his application and various affidavits in support.

He first applied 16 Oct 1832, from Milford, Otsego Co NY, but due to the usual red tape did not actually receive his pension until 1838.  He did sign his name as Barnabas Bates.

He was born at Hingham, MA on 29 Nov 1760 as recorded in the family Bible in the hands of his sister.
When he was six the family moved to Attlebury, MA.
When he was about 15 his father had moved them to Thompson, Windham Co, CT, where he lived until 1809.
He has lived at Milford, Otsego, NY ever since.

He enlisted in Jan 1776 in Attlebury in the MA State Troops for 3 months.  In Jun of 1776 for another 3 months.
After the family had moved to Thompson, a Capt. Turtellot from Rhode Island had recruited there and Barnabas served in the place of a Nathan Thare  in the Rhode Island troops.  One of the delays in receiving his pension was because they could not find any military rolls pertaining to Capt. Turtellot.

Affidavits were from:
Tamar Sargent of Milford who had known him from his youth.  Said she lived in the house with him when he was home before and after his service.  Never did say she was his sister.  Her testimony taken 12 Oct 1832.
Benoni Williams & William Barnard of Milford also testified as to his character and his reported service along with the initial application.
When forms were sent back saying he did not qualify for the pension, additional affidavits were taken.
Job Bates, age 64, living in Westford, Chittenden Co, VT, testified he was his brother and knew of his service, dated 21 Aug 1833
Huldah Brown of Thompson, CT, testified as his sister on 27 Mar 1834, saying she well knew of his absences during the war.
John Bates, age 85, also of Thompson, testified as his brother on 3 Jun 1834.  John stated that Barnabas and another brother had entered the war.  The brother had died in service.  He did not name the brother who died.

And just for the record - there certainly was a Tourtelott family in Rhode Island and of military age.

There is also a DAR lineage for Capt Abraham Tourtellotte of Rhode Island.

The following from email correspondence with another researcher of this family in discussion of the problem regarding Betsy's married name.

I don’t know if the marriage to Barnabas Bates was a second marriage, or if the name “Clinton” is simply wrong.  I do know that the history of Otsego County makes it very clear that Barnabas Bates married the daughter of Lemuel Sargent Sr. But county histories often have errors.  Also, Lemuel Sargent Jr married Tamar Bates (Barnabas’s sister).

Here are the notes I have on Barnabas Bates:

Lived in Thompson, Windham, CT when he purchased his Milford property in 1811.

Barnabas Bates served as a private in the Revolutionary War.  pg 123 of Early History of the Town of Milford and other parts of Otsego Co, NY.  by Ezra Stevens.

Barnabus Bates' name appears in the Otsego Herald on 3/25/1809, 4/1/1809, 4/8/1809, and 4/15/1809, and 4/22/1809.  This is in relation to supporting a candidate in an election and contains no genealogical value.

On 20 July 1832, Barnabas and Elisabeth (his wife) of Milford, conveyed to Samuel Bixby of Milford, Lot 15 of the Charles Reed Subdivision.  Signed by Barnabas and Elisabeth

1840 Census. Milford, Otsego, NY. Listed as pensioner: Barnabas Bates, age 79. I do not find him listed as a head of household - perhaps living with a child.

There is a headstone: Wilcox Farm Cemetery, Milford Twp, Otsego, New York.
Elizabeth Bates. Died Oct. 15, 1840, AE 72 years. (this would be a birth year of 1768, not 1783, and suggests this is NOT the daughter of Lemuel Sargent baptized in August of 1783 and named for a deceased infant sister)
Barnabas Bates, died 27 Feb 1850.

The Bates Family
Simeon Bates, father of Barnabas Bates, came from Tolland, Conn. Before 1800. Barnabas Bates married Betsey Hedges. His oldest son was David. The second son was David. His daughter Almira Bates married Samuel Bixby of Conn.
Barnabas Bates married a daughter of Major Lemuel Sergent. He purchased a farm near Edson Corners & when quite old, his son Lorenzo purchased the farm of his father & remained on it until his death, 1859.
Lorenzo Bates married Abigail Wilcox & had an issue of eleven children. His oldest daughter Henrietta married Hosea Westcott. Sally, the 2nd daughter, married Harvey Westcott. His eldest son Adin never married; died when a young man. Margaret, the third daughter, married Abner Bruce. His second son DeWitt married Armenia Wilcox. Elizabeth, his fourth daughter, married Elisha Robinson of Hartwick. The fifth daughter Emeline married William Scott. The sixth daughter Abigail married Hamilton Westcott. His third son Myrin married Adeline Morris. Ruth, the seventh daughter, married Chester Kingman. Henry, the last son, married Louisa Mumford.
Capt. Lorenzo Bates, a mason by trade, constructed a number of magnificent buildings in the Country. He built the Morse Cotton Factory at New Berlin, the Hope Factory on Oaks Creek below Cooperstown, the old Union mills at Toddsville & also the Phenix Mills on the river in Middlefield. Capt. Bates was a prominent builder, a useful man & a gentleman of the first order.

Early History of the Town of Milford and Other parts of Otsego County, by Ezra Stevens gives the following:
"Barnabus Bates married Betsey Hedges, a daughter of Major Lemuel Sargent. Their children were:
David (second son), Almira, Lorenzo (eldest son), [it then lists the other children]." I'm not saying this is correct, but perhaps the reason David is listed first in line and Lorenzo is listed third is that the first son was David and died. The second son was David and lived, then came Almira, then Betsey Hedges Bates died and Barnabus remarried. Then his eldest son from his second marriage was Lorenzo. So, Betsey Hedges could be another person altogether. Or, it is reasonable that Elizabeth Sarjeant has the middle name of Hedges. She definitely was a daughter of Lemuel Sarjeant, since there are several sources which indicate that.

Barnabus Bates applied for pension benefits for his service in the Revolutionary War on
16 Oct 1832, when he was age 71 and living in Milford, Otsego Co., New York. He
mentions his brother, Job in Vermont, and his sister, Hulda Brown of Windham Co.,
Connecticut.
