STRONG MEN LIVED AT BELLOWS FALLS
Peletiah Sargeant Who Died in 1824 Famed For His His Strength and Skill
From our Special Correspondent
Bellows Falls, VT, Dec 3
Petatiah Sargeant as shown by the records of this town and the traditions of his many descendants, was a prominent man in town and village affairs from 1790 until his death in 1824. He was a much-valued workman in the building of the first wooden dam across the Connecticut her and the canal, in the years from 1790 to 1802. He lived in a small house which stood just north of the old Morgan tavern on the west side of Rockingham street, a short distance north of the present town hall building. He used to own oxen and drew freight around the falls, that was brought up to here from Hartford and Springfield by boats. He was an expert swimmer and diver. Well authenticated traditions of this man come down through earliest citizens and descendants of his family. At one time when the river was very high his boat broke loose from its moorings and floated down the stream in the swift current. He fearlessly plunged into the turbulent waters, seized the painter in his teeth and swam back against the strong current to the boat landing. At one time in cold weather he surprised some of his friends, with whom he was fishing, by suddenly diving through a hole in the ice and swimming down stream until he reached the next hole from which he emerged in safety.
He was an exceptionally strong man and it is related of him that at one time he carried four barrels of flour across the street in Bellows Falls by fastening two barrel to each end of a rail and then placing the rail across his shoulders. This was done on a wager, which he won.
Mr. Sargent was a hunter of wide reputation in this vicinity, and a fluent story teller, especially when descanting upon his hunting experiences. Traditions of his ability for graphic descriptions have come down through later generations and a number of citizens still living remember how in their youth if anyone told a story approaching the bounds of impossibility, the hearer would observe sarcastically, "Oh, that's a Pel Sargeant."
Among the many land records in Rockingham showing transfers to and from Pelatiah Sargeant is one in Volume 2, page 931, by which October 10, 1802, Pelatiah Sargeant mortgaged his home at Bellows Falls to the town of Rockingham, the conditions of which were that he was to "build and keep in repair for 10 years a bridge over the Saxtons River near William Buckley's."
This was without doubt the upper bridge in the village of Saxtons River, on the road leading to Westminster West.
Volume 2, page 750 of the town records has this: "Rockingham, October 25, 1802. I the subscriber do not agree in religious opinion with the majority of the inhabitants of said Rockingham" (signed) Pelatiah Sargeant. This was in accord with the old laws at that time which required that all residents should pay a tax to support the minister employed by the town unless they filed such a certificate.
Pelatiah Sargeant was a son of Capt. Lemuel Sargeant, who had an extended military record and who at one time owned nearly all the land now covered by the village of Bellows Falls. Pelatiah was born in 1771, married in 1792, and had the following children as recorded in Volume 2 of the records of the town, page 858: Azubah, died young; Mariah, married Amos Fairbrother of Westminster, VT; Fanny, married Albert Marsh of Westminster; Solomon married Persis Child of Cambridge, Mass.; Azubah never married. Many descendants are living in surrounding towns of this vicinity in both Vermont and New Hampshire and delight in rehearsing traditions of the family of Pelatiah.
