Judah Browne -- Proved
The Friends' Records of Newport contain the following entry: Judah Brown the son of Chad Brown of Providence in the colony of Rhode Island he dyed at Newport and was buried in the place given by Thomas Clifton upon 10d: 3 mo: (May) 1663"
Chad Browne - Disproved
"There has always been a good deal of confusion regarding this purported child. In 1792, the town of Providence erected a monument in memory of Chad, the father, listing his five sons as John, James, Jeremiah, Chad and Daniel. This can hardly be considered a contemporary source, and does not list Judah, a known son....
The assumption that Chad had a namesake son in apparently the result of a misreading of several 17th century records, a common error of those unfamiliar with the early methods of land distribution. The problem arises from the fact that while Chad Browne died before 16 Dec 1663, his name kept appearing in the records as a recipient in the divisions of land... A son Chad was forced into existence to explain these posthumous references to Chad Browne the original Settler.
The records of other original settlers of Providence show the same pattern: they die, but their names keep appearing as land is set off in their names according to rights obtained during their lifetime...."
