Elizabeth Parkhurst

( - 6 Oct 1727)

Elizabeth said to have died 4 Apr 1657 at the age of 28, Hampton Co, NY - but that is apparently Internet garbage. She wasn't in New York and her husband is the one who died in 1657.

Elizabeth married Emanuel Hilliard, 16 Apr 1640 in Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire. However, Hampton was settled in 1638, as a part of Norfolk Co, MA. An E. Hilliard was settled there prior to 1650. In 1679, New Hampshire was considered a separate colony but continued being governed by Massachusetts. Beginning in 1764, New Hampshire was under the jurisdiction of New York by royal decree. In 1777, New Hampshire declared its independence as a colony.

FindAGrave has the following Memorial #5846658 (has been removed!) and the Merry Family research seems to support this premise. They claim Hilliard died in 1657 and the widow married Joseph.
Elizabeth married 2nd to Joseph Merrey. He was born 1607, England, died 15 Apr 1710. They are buried West Tisbury Village Cemetery, Dukes Co, MA. The inscription on her stone reads:
Mrs. Elizabeth Merry
Who Departed This
Life Janry ye 28
1732

His stone reads:
Mr. Joseph Merrey
Who died april ye 15th
1710 being
103 years ole
that being verified in
him Psalm's 92: 14 They
Shall Bring Forth
Fruit in Old Age

This would have made her also 103 years old - his life span appears to have been the same. I very much suspect this is not quite right. I suspect his wife could be a very different Elizabeth. Or the dates on her stone is very wrong.

The Nutfield Genealogy blog has this to say:
"On 10 October 1657 my 9th great grandfather, Emanuel Hilliard, was granted a farm in Hampton, New Hampshire by his wife's uncle, the Rev. Timothy Dalton. One of Emanuel's four son was named Timothy (probably not a coincidenc).
Just ten days later Emanuel Hilliard was one of eight people on board the board 'Rivermouth', which was lost between Hampton, NH and Boston on 20 Oct 1657. All presumed drowned. His estate was appraised on 19 Nov 1657 in Hampton (Old Norfolk Co, MA Deeds, Vol 1, p.74- this part of New Hampshire still being part of Massachusetts). He left a widow and 4 children.
His widow Elizabeth Parkhurst remarried in 1659 to Joseph Merry and had four more children. He was about 62 years old when the last child was born. His gravestone in Edgartown states that he lived to be 103 years old.
....She was born on 18 May 1628 and died on 6 Oct 1727, probably in Edgartown, on the island of Martha's Vineyard, MA.
