Obituary
Mrs. Sarah Jane H. Callison
Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Jane Hastings Callison, 91, former resident of Vancouver who died Saturday at the home of her grandson Walter Haynes of Portland, were held this morning at 10:30 in the chapel of the Knapp funeral parlors. Dr. Herbert F. Jones officiated and interment was in the family plot of the Vancouver City cemetery.
Mrs. Callison was one of the first passengers to travel on the Union Pacific railroad train from Indiana to San Francisco. This trip took several weeks to make. She came to Vancouver in 1870. And during the early days here the family was forced several times to seek safety in bunk houses at the Barracks when the Indians became troublesome.
On September 5, 1851, she was married to Lewis Hastings in Fayetteville, Ind. He served through the Civil War, engaging in 13 of the principal battles of the war. In 1907 Mr. Hastings died and in October 1914, she married Rufus P. Callison, who died ten months later.
During her lifetime Mrs. Callison was a member of the Christian church, Women's Relief Corps and the Rebekah Lodge, all of Vancouver.
Besides a host of friends left to mourn her death are the following relatives, a daughter, Mrs. Mary F. Moore, Los Angeles, 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren, and a brother, John Wesley Adamson of Bedford, Ind.
