02 Sep 1634 John, s. of Richard & Katharn Garner
Note: although the above child is of approximate age, the given names of Richard and Katherine are not passed down - makes me very suspicious that this is the same John Garner, later in Virginia.

Notes for JOHN GARNER:

Acquired land (3000+ acres) in the northern Neck area of VA.

Named as a settler in the Farrar's Island patent. VA. His passage to VA paid for by William Farrar. "Know Yee (should be 'Thee as the 'Thorn or 'Th. has been misread as a 'y') that I...Sir John Harvey Kt. (Knight?), doe with the consent of the Counsell of State accordingly give and grant unto Willaim Farrar Sonne and heir of William Farrar late of Henrico deceased two thousand acres of Land at Henrico bounding and abutting Easterly upon the Glebeland of Varina and thence extending Westerly to the Bottom of the Island, Southerly upon the Maine River and North into the Woods...for the transportation at his own costs and charges of forty persons into the colony whose names are in the records written under this Patent to have and to hold ye (should be 'the) date ye (again) 10th of June 1637." Settlers named in the Farrar's Island patent. Those with an asterisk also appear in the Muster of Jordan's Journey, 1625. Baker, Jon Baker, William... Frame (France), John * Garner, John Garner, Richard Gibson,John... Turner, Robert * (no relation) Waroner, Matthe... etc. (the above from Alvahn Holmes: (1)The Farrar' Island Family and its English Ancestry and (2) Some Farrar Island Descendants, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1986. The selection comes from (1) p 163,4).

Became orphaned, was made a ward of William Farrar of Henrico County.
His transportation costs from England to VA were paid for by Maj. Lewis Burwell. Bequeathed son Henry Garner 400 acres in Westmoreland Co, VA. John Nance Garner was "Scotch in the male line & Welsh in the other." Mentions the Garners were a well-off family that had "found the way to education & business success" & had fought for both the King vs. the French & for Geo. Washington vs. the King. Also mentions the Garners "had moved west on the outer rim of advancing civilization" but were "not without roots".
The court records of Northumberland, Westmoreland, Stafford, King George & Fauquier counties of VA give ample evidence of the Garner standing as land and property owners. Their names are found on the rosters of the Colonial and Revolutionary Wars as well as those in which the American government has participated.
"The information I have on John Garner (b1633) parents comes from the International Genealogical Index (IGI). Both Richard Garner and Thomas Garner had a son John Garner in about 1633 in England. I believe the evidence is slightly higher for Thomas and Mary being his parents because our John Garner had a son he named Thomas and a daughter he named Mary. This is the only reason I have for favoring Thomas and Mary. John came to
Northumberland County, Virginia in 1650 at the age of seventeen [GK p.1 and CHAPPELEAR p.98]. Greer [GREER p.124] has John Garner listed, as was pointed out by Ms. Ritchie. His transportation to Virginia was provided by Lewis Burwell [GK p.1 and NUGENT p. 199 and 315]. Lewis Burwell was responsible for bringing many people to Virginia WERTENBAKER p.48 and 109] and he was the father of one of the leading colonial families of Virginia [WRIGHT p.56 and 112; VIRKUS p.736; MEYER p.144]. At that time, a person was given a patent which was a grant from the government of England for fifty acres for each immigrant the person brought into the new colony [BOORSTIN p.100 ]. The land was given to the individual who provided the transportation not to the new immigrant. However, the new immigrant received land if he or she paid his or her own way [RITCHIE p. 68].

Sworn as Constable for Cherry Point Neck.

The Colony was building a fort on the Yeocomico River in 1667, and the Association of Northumberland, Westmoreland & Stafford Counties ordered that a house be built for the workmen "by John Garner and other assistants whom he shall select." W.P. At his death, John Garner owned more than 800 acres in one tract of land, a second plantation and more lands adjoining it, a separate parcel of land in Horn Point, at least 4000 pounds of good tobacco in cask, at least half interest in a sloop named "Outcry", a valuable chest, a yoke of oxen, jewelry and other personal property. He arrived in that part of Northumberland Co that was cut off into Westmoreland Co. in 1653.

From Garner-Keene Families of Northern Neck Virginia
John Garner, founder of the family with which this book is chiefly concerned, came to the County of Northumberland in the Colony of Virginia about 1650, at the age of 17; for in that year Lewis Burwell was granted a tract of land in Northumberland for bringing 32 new colonists to the county, among them John Garner, Thomas Broughton, Samuel Moseley, Elizabeth Moseley and their daughter, Jane. (Va L. Gr. B. 2, p 250).

John Garner was born about 1633 for in 1663, he made the deposition in which he stated he was thirty years old. (North, R. B. 15, p. 102).

John Garner married Susanna Keene, daughter of Thomas and Mary Keene of Northumberland County. Susanna was probably born on Kent Island in the Potomac River during the period (1634-1649) when it was in dispute between Virginia and Maryland. In 1649 it officially became a part of Maryland.

This marriage is thought to have taken place about 1660, for in 1659 Susanna's stepfather and guardian, Thomas Broughton, gave her her share of her father's cattle, designating her by the name of Susanna Keene; (North, R. B. 16, p. 30) while her mother's will in 1662 mentioned her as the wife of John Garner and as having a daughter. (North, R. B. 15, p. 92).

John Garner died early in 1702, for his will (west. D. & W. B. #3, p 153 et seq.) was dated January 22, 1702, proved May 25, 1702, and recorded January 1, 1703.

Susanna Garner survived her husband by about 14 years. She left no will but the records show her estate was inventoried March 28, 1716 by James Carr, James Thomas and William Garner. (West. D. & W. B. 4, p. 560) On May 30, 1716 her son Benjamin, stated that his mother's clothes had not been appraised but had been divided among her daughters at the time of her funeral. (west. D. & W. B. 5, p. 57)

In the order book of Fauquier Co., Va. March 1774 page 69 is a record of a suit brought by Thomas Garner, Vincent Garner, Parish Garner, Charles Garner, and James Garner, devisees of Thomas Garner, and John Garner, William Garner, Mary Garner, Susannah Garner and Charles Garner, children of John Garner, deceased who was one of the devisees of the said Thomas Garner, versus Thomas Harrison, Gent.
