Carlton Belt

(1772 - 1816)

From "Centennial history of the city of Newark and Licking County, Ohio", P. 299
Belt Mill
In October of this year (1802) quite a little colony came from Washington Co PA and settled in Neward and Cherry Valley (Ohio). These were Abraham Johnson, Abraham Wright, William B. Gaw, James Petticord, Edward Nash, Carlton Belt, Benedict Belt, Aquilla Belt, Little John Belt, Black John Belt. These Belts were joined in a few years by Long John Belt.
In the winter of 1802-3 James Petticord and Little John Belt began the erection of a mill which became the Buskirk mill in 1804. John Van Buskirk ran this mill more thirty years.

Tax list from Licking Co, OH, 1810 - Carlton Belt in Granville Twp. A Carlton Belt was listed in Fairfield Co, 1807 & 1808.

There is a puzzle regarding his father - was it Richard as suggested by the above group of Belt males, some named in the will of Richard Belt?

A descendant, Mary Ella Harrison Adamson, who claimed DAR membership on this line has very different parents for Carlton Belt and may well be wrong. She states that this Carlton was the son of a Carleton Belt b. 1743, d. 1802 and his wife Mary Watson who married about 1768. The elder Carleton Belt served in the Rev War as an Aide-de-camp to Col. Campbell, Flying Camp of the 1st Maryland Battalion.

However, NSDAR states that problems have been discovered with at least one verified paper - A comment states that Carlton Belt, son of this patriot, married Elizabeth Jones, NOT Mary Crouch. Five applicants including Mary Ella Harrison Adamson that applied through Carlton Belt & Mary Crouch have been marked that future applicants must prove correct lineage.
