Note: John Britton served as commissioner to divide lands of the deceased several times. The following was a time he served with his brother in law.
Nov Term 1837 Carlton V. Belt & John Britton, two of the commissioners for the division of lands of William Reed, dec'd.

There was, also living in Vigo Co, a C. C. Belt - Carlton Crouch Belt, b. 1 Apr 1838, d. 6 Nov 1927 in Terre Haute. He married Elizabeth Ann Balding (1848-1906) and is buried Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute. He was a nephew, son of Jared Belt.

Also living in the household in 1850 were a female, America Recard, age 21 born Ky and Charles Wiltshire, age 24, a cooper born in Ohio. Relationship unknown. (In 1860, he will be living with Myron Allen and I believe married Myron's daughter Catherine.)
Next door to Carlton lived Jared Belt, age 44, also born in Ohio - no doubt a brother to Carlton. Wife Sarah, and children George, John, Carlton, Sarah A., and Samuel. This must be a 2nd marriage of Jared as there is a marriage record: Jared Belt to Sarah Dawson 25 Jun 1842, Vigo Co IN. Children Sarah A. & Samuel ages 4 and 2 are much younger than the others. George was 15, John 14, and Carlton, 11.
J. Belt was in the 1840 census in Vigo Co IN, at that time there were 2m under 5, 1m 5-10, 1m 30-40 [probably Jared], 1f 5-10, and 1f age 20-30.

April Term, 1852, Vigo County Probate Court
Carlton C. Belt petitioned to be appointed guardian of George Belt, John Belt, Carlton Belt, Ann Belt, and Samuel Belt - all minor heirs of Jared Belt. He asked to sell as lot that Jared Belt had owned and noted that Sarah Belt, widow, had dower interest in the lot. Appraisors were appointed, valuing the lot at $700 and on 22 Apr 1852, it was sold to Ann, James E., Matilda & Josephine Coomes for that amount. Deed was made and the case closed 22 Apr 1852.


Carlton's family is said to have "gone to California". However, I found them in Wisconsin in 1855.

Hh 885, Empire P.O. was Peter A. Hoskins, wife and child, and his mother Amanda, who was a sister to Chloe.

I found a plat mat of the Township of Taycheedah in 1862. M. H. Allen had property that bordered Lake Winnebago. J. C. Robbins, son-in-law of Myron H. Allen, had property just north of his. C. C. Belt was slightly south of them, although he did not have property bordering the lake.

In 1870, George Belt was still in Taycheedah. He and Eliza had another child - Laura E., age 8. I didn't find his father.
